Just cut and pasted this from a Leeds Facebook page. Allan Clarke: “I find a lot of football nowadays quite boring, I think the money has ruined it. In my day it was a more level playing field. Look at Manchester City. They are the best team because they have spent the most money." “But I’ll tell you this, for all those millions they have had to pay to get those players at Man City, plus all those millions they have to pay them, that great Leeds side I was part of would bury them alive. We were better players.” He explains: “It’s all about touch and control. In our day, we stopped the ball dead. Our team at Leeds was a league team but we were all internationals.” Discuss
City would smash them, as said above. If money spent equalled undoubted sucess, Man United & Chelsea would be first & second. Arsenal would have won something in the 5 years since Arteta arrived, after that first season. Everton wouldn't be fighting relegation, nor would Nottingham Forest.
That Leeds team still rolls off the tongue 50 years down the line. Sprake Reaney, Charlton, Hunter, Cooper Lorimer, Bremner, Giles, Gray Clarke, Jones Subs Stewart, Madeley, McQueen, Jordan, Bates Its all hypothetical but I reckon that back 4 and midfield 4 were every bit as good as City's now. Eddie Gray on his day was unplayable and more skillful than anyone in the City midfield.
Would depend on whether or not the game was played and refereed as they things are today or as they were in the 1970s. Under todays game management Leeds would probably be down to 9 men by half time and City would blow them away. It would be a different story however if it was played under 1970s rules, refereeing and game management. With only two injury subs allowed and the tackling permitted back then it would be a much more even contest which I think Leeds would come out top. They wouldn’t blow City away though as City would in the first scenario
That Leeds team would average a red card every 30 minutes. Horrible, nasty team. As Cloughie said...you got those medals by cheating...
Played on a mud bath that modern players have only seen pictures of....with a ball that was bloody heavy when wet.
I'd certainly say the Man utd team of 67/68 would give the present city a run for their money. But bear in mind most teams in those days didn't dip into the world market.
Personally, I think the teams comparable to this City team over the last few years are Ajax in the mid 60s, Brazil 1970, Ac Milan in late 80s and Barcelona around 2010. Probably Real Madrid at some point in their illustrious history too. Possibly that United side in mid 60s, and Liverpool late 70s/early 80s. Of course, I can only comment that as my opinion is based on videos before my time/reading/word of mouth. But having watched plenty, since I make quizzes on football like a little nerd, that's what I'd suggest but maybe I'm just talking out me arse. I think the Barcelona squad 2008-2012 is the best ever. Possibly Brazil 1970, but obviously it's hardly fair to compare considering Barcelona could spend money.
Can you imagine Jack Grealish in his Alice band coming up against Norman Hunter? That clash alone would be worth the gate money
He gets a lot of stick does Grealish, rightly so, cos he's been a diving bugger for all his career (though not as bad compared to some others), but he's a cracking lad. The amount of videos I've seen of him with young fans is brilliant, disabled kids have huge smiles on their face when he's around, it's ace to see. It's so easy for him to do and make their day, and something they'll remember forever, but yet a lot of other players do absolutely nowt. I remember earlier this season seeing Leeds & Arsenal players just walking past kids and not even acknowledging them You are right though, and I'd certainly pay it
Football really isn’t a sport you can compare past teams with current ones. Even the glory side I grew up with (and still love) Glavin, Banks etc…. would be beaten by the team we have had out this season. It’s a different game in pace, technical ability, diet etc….
