Without even knowing what’s happened it’s been used to influence games rather than make them more fair.
Aston villa v Liverpool. They've used var for about 28 potential offsides so far. On one occasion it came up on the tv screen var decision onside. The fans started celebrating clearly having seen on their phones. Ref continues to stand like a pillock for a further 30 seconds while they decide what they've already decided and put up on the screen. Another they were zoomed in on two players checking to see which player was further forward. Spent absolutely ages doing it too. Oh then they zoomed out to show the other defender about 6 miles further forward
It’s really ruined the flow of the game as a whole and to my mind makes referees worse, scared to make a decision in case they look stupid and the VAR ref reluctant to overturn the stupid decisions they do make. Bonkers.
That's part of the problem. On 2 of the occasions, I called off side. It took me all of 1 second on seeing the full screen (close up didn't show anything other than the player who was off side). It then took about another 30 seconds for that to be made official. No idea why they need to take so long, cos these 2 decisions didn't need a line to be drawn either. It's either clear or not. If your drawing lines to decipher if someone's toe is offside, go with on field decision. Get on with it.
I understand the part about having to go to the millimetre because if not where is acceptable? An inch? 2? A foot? But it's 2024 there are sensors that can tell who is further up the pitch and there are slow motion cameras to identify the exact moment a ball leaves a foot. The combination of the two means an absolutely clear decision should be able to be given in a matter of seconds and yet we rely on a guy drawing lines over people's feet to try and guess
Stick a chip in every player's boot and a collision sensor in the ball. You'd have near instant objective decisions.
VAR is a great idea if used properly' the problem is its been used far too much in every game' if you watch rugby league its only used when the referee feels he may have missed something' he gestures with the sign of a tv then the VAR operator goes through the incident verbally telling everyone what he's seeing and why he's making his decision' it really isn't rocket science' it should be at the referees discretion and not VAR operators stopping the game every 10 mins.
