Gareth Southgate due to announce his provisional squad at some point today. Then has to be cut down to 26 players maximum. At this moment in time taking in form and fitness who would you select? Here's my choice. Goalkeepers Pickford Ramsdale Pope Defenders Walker Alexander-Arnold Stones Maguire Guehi Tomori Dier Tyrick Mitchell Trippier Central midfielders Rice Gallagher Mainoo Wharton Attacking midfielders Foden Bellingham Saka Palmer Bowen Gordon Eze Strikers Kane Watkins Solanke
Shocked but glad he has finally got shut of Henderson. Ajax are 5th 35 points off top. He hasn't scored a goal in his 16 matches for them. I still didn't think Southgate would do it though.
Whilst I agree that Henderson should be nowhere near the England squad, I wouldn't say it's because of his form at Ajax. He's only played 9 times for them, and his goal record isn't really relevant as he's a holding midfielder. He obviously spent 6 months before that pretending to fix LGBT+ relations in Saudi-Arabia.
Gareth Southgate has named a 33-player provisional England squad for Euro 2024. Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal), James Trafford (Burnley). Defenders: Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton), Lewis Dunk (Brighton), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Harry Maguire (Man Utd), Jarell Quansah (Liverpool), Luke Shaw (Man Utd), John Stones (Man City), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle), Kyle Walker (Man City). Midfielders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Conor Gallagher (Chelsea), Curtis Jones (Liverpool), Kobbie Mainoo (Man Utd), Declan Rice (Arsenal), Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace). Forwards: Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Jarrod Bowen (West Ham), Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), Phil Foden (Man City), Jack Grealish (Man City), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), James Maddison (Tottenham), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Ivan Toney (Brentford), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa).
Four get cut on June 7th. Credit to Southgate who can name a bigger squad than usual and yet still took the chance to be bold with plenty of surprises. Defensively we look weak and dependent on the first choice guys not getting injured.
Wonder who the next player which people like to beat Southgate with will be? Henderson, Phillips, Rashford and Sterling all missing. Can’t be any arguments with that squad. Be a challenge to knock that down to 26, all worthy of a place on the plane.
We don't need 4 keepers so one of the four will be that position. I would say Trafford who got dropped for not being good enough for a relegated club.
Biggest question mark in there for me would be Luke Shaw, recovering from injury still but probably highlights lack of lb options
Good squad that, GS has made some tough but correct decsions, if it clicks on the pitch and we find the right formula with that odd bit of luck you need in tournament football, then there's no reason why England can't win it. Heart says England, head says Spain as dark horses with a France v Spain final
Big worry not having a natural left back assuming Shaw doesn’t make it , I’m not Chilwell’s biggest fan but he would give us more balance
I hate it when we play right footer’s at left back it always ends with the player coming inside and never getting to the byline plus i think Trippier is past it at international level.
As refreshing as it is to see some of the regulars dropped, I would still have found a place for Sterling. I accept he hasn’t had the best of seasons for Chelsea but his international record alongside Harry Kane has been phenomenal. Worth a place in the provisional squad if nothing else just to see if they still have the same chemistry.
Very surprised at no Eric Dier - he's England's form centre-half. A little surprised at no Sancho as well, but England are stacked on the wing.
My seven to miss out: James Trafford we don't need four keepers. Lewis Dunk doesn't look international class. Luke Shaw hasn't been fit. Adam Wharton (Just because Palace won a few games their players are Demi Gods). Bowen isn't going to play ahead of Foden, Saka or Grealish (Harsh but true, waste of a place). Maddison has been shocking for Spurs since his injury. Watkins doesn't have the all-round game.
