If the Tories win the election National Service will be re introduced. Can’t see that being a vote winner.
Going to happen either way - without doubt Tories aren't getting in, but national service is coming back, the country cannot run without it
Well I’m 68 on my birthday, not far off 70 and I am totally against any form of conscription. Then again I have absolutely no right wing views.
It's not going to be conscription. Most national service will not be with the armed forces, it will be with the NHS, with care services, with the police, it will be 2 years learning skills that will give young people a better chance to get a better job and serve society and it's a million miles away from a right wing policy. And it is definitely going to happen.
Well, do you think, post Brexit, we're doing well? Do you think we have a functioning society? There isn't even food security never mind home security. Our society is broken. Mainly because people over 60 voted for us to leave Europe. We have to deal with that, we have to deal with what people who pulled up the ladders did to this country, and how we're going to deal with it is national service. And, despite all the protestations, it's going to be our first foot forward in about 70 years.
As long as we start with the generation born in the fifties onwards who didn't end up having to do it. They're overdue and would do well to give something back for once.
Wow! I was born 1956. So what exactly would you have me and others in my age bracket do? Personally I’m not in the best of health. Have had better days. Gonna reveal just how old you are. Your opinions just seem a bit ott.
Sorry Jay, that’s a massive generalisation. I’m over 70 and I fought tooth and nail against Brexit. A lot of us did. It was always a Tory/Farage con trick to give them time at the trough and it worked. It wrecked the economy and showed us up as a small minded nation.
I wouldn't have you doing anything because the idea of national service is ridiculous, but if we do introduce it I'm sure you could help picking up litter or whatever Rishi has in mind for those who don't want to join the army for a year. I don't see how it's OTT to expect people who avoided national service to have to make it up.
It is, I agree, but if you look at the numbers, look at the percentages, and you take out the over 60 vote, Brexit doesn't happen. And not even close. Of course there are people in that age bracket who voted differently, but forgive me for feeling aggrieved that our country has been screwed for generations by people who will not feel the full effects of what they voted for.
So you wouldn’t have me doing anything but in your next breath you’d have me picking up litter. Let me guess. You have voted Tory all your life. You do not sound like a very nice person. You wanna have a good look at yourself.
It's not a million miles away from a right wing policy if you throw them into working in for-profit companies for peanuts, which is almost certainly what will end up happening. See also apprenticeships - great idea in theory, predictably awful in practice. Guarantee everybody who does it a living wage and I'll start listening.
It's not. I've watched the cross party debates, or colleagues have. It's part of our job, we have to. This is not a single party policy, this is across the board. It's happening. And when it's fully explained I expect the majority to be onboard with it. The Tories are scum, well, the current governmental branch of the party are. But this isn't their idea.
