Being born in a certain year can hardly be called avoiding national service

But there will be an exemption for anyone with a place at Eton.

It is not going to happen. In any way, shape or form.

Its not going to happen for the reasons some have listed above. It will be too difficult to implement, there will be 'exemptions' for people which won't seem fair and which will undermine it. It will cost money and may very well be a waste of public money if its poorly run or is seen not to work. It also doesn't seem 'fair' if it only targets one certain age group. Cultural and deferential/nationalistic attitudes have also moved on since 1960 and there would be resistance/non-attendance etc. Its basically a panic announcement from Sunak to appeal to older voters and stop people voting for Reform. Sunak has no effective ideas and 'National Service' wont work.

All bang on. We might add that: 1. The full-time military do not want hampering with this nonsense, and 2. The scheme would spend many years mired in the higher courts on the grounds you mention above. But the Tories aren't getting in anyway.

Why have a dig at the over 60s? You could also say, "mainly because the younger generation couldn't be arsed to vote".

I’m over 60 and I certainly didn’t vote for Brexit. I’m not disagreeing with your analysis, I just don’t see how national service has anything to do with a solution.

I'd like to bet it wouldn't include Tarquin and Tamara,,,, and there wouldn't be many Rees-Moggs involved either!

Is it chuff. There are communities that are unreachable and that the same rules don’t apply to. It would clearly never work

I think it's a great idea. They should implement it as soon as they've sorted the transport, water, education, crime, NHS, courts, stopped the boats and built the promised 43 new hospitals.

This is the crux of the matter, even if we pretend that all the 18 year olds are keen and ready to go, and have no special educational needs that requires extra support being put in place, 25 days is not enough time to train them to be genuinely useful. Especially when it’s not even 25 consecutive days but is one weekend a month. Some of the roles involve working with highly vulnerable people and confidential information (delivering medication, search and rescue foot patrols) and most of the time will be entirely taken up with safeguarding training. It would be a nightmare to implement.

Not going to happen. most teachers will tell you that behaviour in schools is a major problem. Does anyone really think that those same people are going to play by the rules in the forces. I was a YTS official back in the day and ya couldn't do owt with some of the 16 year old attendees then so good luck now.."Stand by ya beds" no chance.

Just listening to James Cleverley attempting to defend this horsesh1t on Trevor Phillips. It's very apparent he doesn't really believe in it!

It won't work' there are too many of us with a conscience these days' as it happens i'm too old but theres no way i'd fight someone elses war and take peoples lives. It should be put into international law that the leaders of warring countries are compelled to go on the frontline and lead by example' i suspect that wars would then decrease dramatically.

So will companies be expected to pay their 18 year old staff member for a year whilst they aren't there and keep their job open for them? If the government are going to cover the wages of that person where is the cash coming from when we are already skint? Uni freshers would then be 19.
