He had a great first half of the season saving us on many occasions. However a poor end of the season especially struggling to command his area and claim crosses from corners.
Early days but 7-0 to no. Good keepers are not hard to find. It's probably the easiest position to find someone decent.
I wouldn’t be unhappy with him back. I think there might be better out there as his form was terrible towards the back end but then he still managed to put in some great performances in that time as well. I would be ok with giving him a short contract with the option for us to extend if he performs consistently.
Yes, for two reasons. 1) He is good (ok, all 11 were poor last ten games, but we saw what he could do) 2) I'd like our own long-term stopper. Was Brad our last 'own' keeper?
Would prefer Southwood personally but Roberts is a decent keeper and knows Clarke too from his time at Walsall
I’m not keen on signing Roberts again. I’m wondering if we will get Luke Southwood who is out of contract at Cheltenham
His kicking is his downfall - but that can be worked on, but at 29 he’ll not perfect it now. The errors you can forget about, as the whole team took a confidence dip at the same time. But that’ll make him a stronger keeper in the long run. You have to face and move on from difficult periods. He also has that extra year’s experience at L1 and will learn from it. You might find other young keepers too, but lack that additional game time experience and also knowledge of his team mates. For me, it’s a yes, as he knows the team and helps create that stability again at the back. He’s 29 and offers a more mature head.
I’d have preferred us to have gone for Isted last season, but Roberts was decent up until the end of the season with his drastic loss of form. But that’s what it was - a loss of form. No reason to think that he is a bad keeper all of a sudden. Think he’s shown enough to suggest he is very capable at this level.
Agree. But Isted for me was always a risk - as he hadn’t experienced a rough patch so to speak. He came into a good team with matching results. It’s when the chips are down - that’s where you improve long term. I think Roberts tips it for me.
A No from me, when he came I was scratching my head as to why boro let him go, then for the back end of the season I probably got why, Matt Macey would be my choice, a free from Pompey but apparently bloody Col united are looking at taking him
Not surprised at his loss of form with that defence in front of him and Collins tactics of passing around at the back, lad was towing his bag out keeping us in games. It was obvious he wouldn't be able to keep it up all season.
It's a tough one because, as a shot stopper, he's up there as one of the best I've ever seen at Oakwell. He falls down on commanding his area though, which to me, is probably more important. His form tailed off at the end of last season, but that doesn't concern me too much. If we can build a defence that prevents too many crosses into the box, I'd be more than happy for us to re-sign Roberts.
I disagree with this. I think it's possibly the position which has the single greatest impact on a team's points scored over a season. Other than keepers who drop clangers I agree they can seem to be much of a muchness but I think that's due to how we perceive them. If a keeper dives at full stretch and fails to save something then that's not regarded as a mistake, whereas a better keeper might have had better positioning and kept it out with what looked like an easy save. I think clubs massively underrate goalkeepers and don't put enough effort or analysis into their recruitment.
He can't deal with crosses into the six yard box. That should be correctable but, as of yet, it doesn't seem to have happened.
Yes from me. Overall he performed well last season in an entirely new defence. Always gave his best, and made some crucial saves.
