“To be honest I only found out my grandmother was Hungarian about two years ago,” said Styles in 2022. English born and bred, Styles knew his grandmother wasn’t English, but had never thought to ask where she was from until lockdown...

Crikey! He wasn’t a very inquisitive kid was he? I used to quiz my elders about everything, and they were always keen to compare and talk about times gone by - my grandmas ‘Bratfud’ accent was something she was proud of. :)

Footballers, with the rare exception, are not the brightest sparks are they.

There might be a reason she didn't want to talk about the past.

I fully get that, but I still think it’s a bit strange. Many old soldiers might not like to relive the horrors of war, but wouldn’t necessarily hide the fact they’d been in the forces.

He actually says he never thought to ask her. That’s not on her

Based on how he plays football he was probably too lazy to ask

Maybe nobody in the family talked about it, otherwise he would have known.

To be honest I only found out my grandmother was Hungarian about two years ago. I knew they were from a country but I didn't know where it was and then it was around lockdown time and I just wanted to know more.

I haven’t a clue how old granny goulash is, or what circumstances brought her to the Uk, but he clearly knew she wasn’t British. Just because other members of his family may or may not have advertised her place of birth, I still think it very strange for a child not to ask questions. That’s all my point is really, that kids are naturally inquisitive. It’s a part of how we learn.

I agree with you totally, sounds very odd to me. I had one Grandad who was from Glasgow and I used to quiz him about it all the time and he used to try and teach me to speak with a Scottish accent. Hardly exotic but as child it seemed like another world.

I think the interview is all about getting a story out of him playing for Hungary and putting him in the spotlight for a move away from Oakwell. It’s seems like we’ve been here before because I am sure similar stories about his family history have been raised in the past. Let’s hope this one does the trick and we finally part ways with Calum. Best for all parties as we don’t want to be stuck with him next season. Be good to get him off wage bill, so good luck in Euros!

Another interesting piece & just a pity that some folks have to respond with petty, immature jibes.
I can't remember the detail, but do know it was a lockdown project for Callum to learn more about his family & his grandmother was deceased.
For all we know, he may never have met his grandmother & given his passion for football, I don't think it'd be surprising that he wasn't in to genealogy. Whatever, just no need for such disrespect IMO.

Once said ‘Cheers’ to a bloke, maybe 60s, who was Hungarian after he bought us a few pints in a rock bar in Budapest. He wasn’t happy. Supposedly the Austrians said cheers when they took down members of the Hungarian parliament.

    A lesson learnt.
