But 85% of wage earners don't get anywhere near that. And have no chance of ever doing so, no matter how much they study and how hard they work. That's the point, that I think you're missing.

Disgusting. Just disgusting. To claim that people earning half a fifty grand wage aren't doing exactly what you describe.

    You appall me.

I'm a Payroll Manager, worked for 7 companies Inc NHS, Universities and the private sector in Barnsley, Sheffield and Leeds, 50k is a good wage, a very good wage in the public sector.

It's also way above the national average of £34,963 from the latest stats for the ONS. So anyone on it or above it, yes you are earning good money.

Of course those who earn more should pay more.

More than that I think. It's minimum wage for most which would mean 80 hours+ a week I believe. 11 hour days every week day and 12 on weekends.

I think people are saying in the current climate 50k while is a good wage its hardly massive if you have a family car mortgage want to actually live so why should they be taxed so much more than someone on 35k? They may aswell cut hours to avoid the tax. I could understand if they were on 100k a year.

    Strongly, strongly disagree with this.

Back on topic, of course 50k is a good wage. Can't believe many people, especially in this neck of the woods think otherwise.

Can't disagree with that; at least about costs rising

But most people I know earn much closer to 25k than 50k which is why plenty of people see 50k as a good salary. I certainly do

When you're talking about family, you need to add the two salaries together, so if ones earning over 50k they'll have decent family income

100k ers would probably say the same as they would have bigger houses and cars etc.
I get what you are saying though as I’ve heard people refuse overtime etc and even promotions as it would take them into a higher tax bracket.

Before I went self employed I was on over £50k, my Wife stayed at home though to look after the kids, we didn’t enjoy a lavish lifestyle but clearly the fact she never worked meant we were OK.

I earn what I’d describe as a very good wage for the Barnsley area, enough for the Mrs to be part time & we’ve gone from never really worrying about money to having to be a bit more careful now with what we spend. Fortunately we can still get abroad once a year & have a takeaway or meal out on a weekend & I can afford my season ticket fairly comfortably but 5-6 years back my wage would’ve gone so much further.

We’ve often said we don’t know how people bringing families up are doing it on fairly modest wages. I really feel for anyone whose mortgage deal has ended in the last 2 years as well. It must be so tough on them.

Someone in my block of flats works for them and they get minimum wage. That means 80 hours+ a week to get 50K. I don't call that comfortable.

Don’t worry I totally get it. I was struggling before and only feel like we keep our head above water now.
