Pickford (still our best number 1)

Walker (use pace to support and overlap Bowen)

Stones (given the green light to carry the ball forward if space allows)

    Guehi (just defend)

Shaw (if he was 100% fit)

    Rice (just sits in)

Bellingham (alongside Rice but licence to drive forward)

Bowen (beat the fullback get to the byline and cross it)

    Palmer (interchange with Foden)

    Foden (interchange with Palmer)

Kane (stay up and press the centre halves creating space for whoever is in the number 10 position)

Get a manager who doesn't bore the pants off us with his tactics.

We should play a 4-3-3/4-1-4-1 like essentially all of our players are used to at a club level.

Foden and Bellingham as two number 10s.

Try players in their club positions rather than forcing them into a different system.

1-1 and the second half is drifting, the first sub he makes is Connor Gallagher...... That's a problem.

    The manager is poor.

May as well have brought on Frank Gallagher and scattered the Danish defence.

Kane can't/doesnt press though, that's the issue. Without your front focal point putting in the work, it's pointless because there will always be an option to pass to without pressure

Replace Southgate and let the so called front lot play to their so called ability.
Next match drop Rice, Foden and don’t use Gallagher as first sub

Replace Southgate with a nice potted plant in the dugout.
If ever there's been a fraud of an international manager it's this fella..

It’s got to be a 4-3-3, Rice holding, Bellingham sitting slightly deeper than Foden. Palmer/Gorden on the left wing, Saka on the right and Kane without the drop deep manager instruction.

This is the way I'd be tempted to go with walker dropping in to make a back 3 and put Trent to RWB

    Pickford
    Trent, Walker, Stones, Guehi, Tripper
    Bellingham, Rice, Foden
    Watkins, Kane

They need to sort out the Kane / Bellingham / Foden issue. You’ve essentially got 3 players trying to be the number 10.

Both Kane & Foden need to be told to hold their positions more or they’re out of the side.

Both Saka & Foden need to attack the full back more. Saka’s done it occasionally but I don’t think Foden has in two games.

You can only play Trent in midfield if your wide men are trying to get in behind. If they keep coming deep for the ball then it’s utterly pointless.

I don’t think it’s the personnel that’s necessarily the issue it’s the way they’re playing. Foden’s more than capable of doing a good job on the left hand side but for whatever reason he’s never on the wing. He needs to stay high & wide more. He needs to make runs like Son did for Kane at Spurs.

I think the rest of the issues from last night such as players like Rice & Walker giving the ball away lots & the defence been too deep would stop been an issue if Kane & Foden hold their positions more.

If neither are willing to then replace them with Gordon & Watkins who will.

Alan Shearer’s comments about Kane over the first two games have been 100% spot on.

I would also love to see Wharton start. I think he’s ideal at the side of Rice but he seems to be behind all of Trent, Gallagher & Mainoo right now.

Playing Trent in midfield can and could work if the team was actually picked to suit.

We have players with pace who could run in behind and find space, which Trent’s passing ability would find regularly. He has been selected, but everything in front of him is coming short and compressing the game. Trent has been picked to do something the tactical setup doesn’t allow. And has now been criticised for not being Kalvin Phillips. That says everything about the manager, bleating about a player who isn’t there rather than changing the setup to better utilise the players he has.

He won’t change shape so I won’t select a team that suggests this, but for me we need to run at sides more, so the obvious thing to do is have Bellingham deeper - ‘8’ as they now refer to it, Foden 10, and a winger in the left. Gordon is the obvious choice but no concerns either should it be Eze.

    Pickford
    Walker Stones Guehi Trippier/Shaw
    Bellingham Rice
    Saka. Foden. Gordon
    Kane

Drop Alexander-Arnold as he offers absolutely nothing in midfield.

Play Bellingham alongside Rice so he can drive forward with the ball.

Play Foden in the number 10 and Bowen/Gordon and Saka on the wings.

Get Foden and the wingers to run in behind Kane. Without the ball ask Kane to put a shift in and support him with the press.

Mr Southgate’s master plan play **** and let everyone else think that, qualify and then play everyone off the park……………..
Personally I think he’s been to see our last head coach for lessons on boring football

What we all seem to overlook is that English players all have world class foreigners around them who, in most cases, make them look better than they actually are!

Essentially we've allowed the Gerrard/Lampard debate to ruin another tournament, which is quite incredible since they last played for England a decade ago. Comparrisons between the aforementioned and Foden/Bellingham are off the mark, yet people have used them as a reason to supposedly avoid playing Bellingham out of position, Bellingham has proven for both club and country that he's effective as a central midfielder - yes he's had a good season playing a more attacking role for Madrid, but when we have a wealth of attacking talent it makes obvious sense to partner him with Rice in the middle.

It’s a very good point and one I often consider. Also at club level they tend to be coached by top level foreign coaches too. It may be time for England to try going with a top foreign coach again and see if he can get the best out of them.

I was prepared to back Southgate but his comments about having no natural replacement for Kalvin Phillips are baffling. He is talking about him as though he was some kind of world class midfielder! It was Bielsa who got the best out of him which thinking about it adds more weight to the argument that top coaches can get much more out of a group of players.
