In the face of everything we’ve seen in the first two games, instead of playing Bellingham a bit deeper, Foden at 10 and playing a winger, Gordon, Eze, whoever, on the left - it appears that Mr Risk Averse has chosen to leave the team pretty much as it was but replace TAA with the ever dynamic Conor ‘yellow card’ Gallagher. The man is unbelievable.
Effectively Southgate is saying that there’s not really anything wrong - let’s just tweek it. Leopards don’t change their spots I’m afraid.
I think it’s more a system issue than personnel. If Kane stays high & Foden stays wide then I think we’ll be a lot better.
He’s effectively saying he’s got the selection right in terms of balance and setup but Trent wasn’t good enough… Trent in midfield is a masterstroke if you have runners in front of the ball as if they find a yard or two of space he will pick them out at will. We don’t have runners. Everything is short to feet. He selected Trent for his passing range and nullified any effect by having nobody in the side to make use of that range. Trent had absolutely no chance of excelling in the role. So now he just picks another grunter in the middle of the park. Nothing against Gallagher, he’ll do a job - but he’s hardly what we need to spark the team to life. I just don’t get what would have been so difficult in playing Bellingham at eight, Foden ten and a winger to run at them and stretch the game. But what do I know?
Agree. Its all sit and control from Southgate. Just relies on the occasional piece of individual skill. However, having said that tomorrow's game is tomorrow's game and we might be pleasantly surprised Then again, scrub that last sentence...
He’s ****. He’s been like it since day one hence our inability to beat better sides. Tomorrow’s game, like the Denmark and Serbia games, screams out two up top.
Not really Id just say he is predictable. If I was a betting man that's what I would have put money on happening I don't agree with it but who wants to be entertained eh
