Sky Bet EFL broadcast selections for the period up until to the end of September have now been confirmed, with every EFL Club set to feature a minimum three times in total.

All broadcast-selected Sky Bet EFL matches have now been allocated until the end of September

This season sees the launch of a new five-year broadcast deal between Sky Sports and the EFL

The Reds' home clash with Stockport County will now kick-off at 7:45PM on Saturday 28th September

The minimum three times will include an opening weekend fixture, a Carabao Cup tie and at least one regular weekend fixture on Sky Sports for all clubs. With an increase in matches available for fans on Sky Sports this season, the League has also defined how TV selections will work for regular weekend matches selected for broadcast, and what this will look like. The full list of broadcast selections is available at EFL.com.

Sky Bet EFL fixtures will be broadcast via either an existing Sky Sports channel or Sky Sports+ - a new way for fans to discover and stream live sport. Integrated into the current Sky TV experience and the revamped Sky Sports mobile app, Sky Sports+ is available at no extra cost for subscribers of the full Sky Sports package. All televised fixtures will also be available on streaming service NOW.

    Schedule and Slots
With the uplift in matches, fans can expect the following template for broadcast-selection matches for regular weekends, where all divisions and the Premier League play, up until the end of September.

This is subject to non-foreseeable match postponements:

Up to 10 regular weekend games across the three divisions will be broadcast

Up to five Sky Bet Championship matches

Up to five matches across Sky Bet League One and Sky Bet League Two

Up to three Championship matches and, for the first time, at least one League One or League Two fixture will be broadcast on Sky Sports Main Event or Sky Sports Football

The remaining broadcast fixtures will be available to watch via Sky Sports+

26 out of the 36 regular weekend games across the three divisions will remain in the Saturday 3PM slot, which will not be broadcast in the UK

For matches on a regular weekend broadcast outside of the blocked hours, fans can watch seven matches on a Saturday lunchtime (12:30PM kick-off), frequent slots on a Friday night and additional selected picks on a Thursday night, Sunday afternoon and Monday night.

    TV Pick Notice

Following the EFL’s Fixture Release Day and announcement of the broadcast selections for the opening weekend, this announcement provides fans and Clubs further notice of schedule
amendments. In addition, and prior to the start of the 2024/25 season, all TV selections will be confirmed for the period up to the FA Cup third round in early January. This is a landmark commitment, providing fans and clubs up to five months’ notice, an increase from the five weeks' notice given across the majority of the 2023/24 season.

The League is committed to greater parity in the number of times that Clubs are selected for TV coverage across all competitions, with Clubs set to feature more than 20 times per season on Sky
    Sports.

    International Break Weekends

All fixtures played in League One and League Two will be available for broadcast on Sky Sports, the majority of these in the Saturday 3PM slot.
At least one match from each division will be broadcast on Sky Sports Main Event or Sky Sports Football, with the remaining matches available to stream via Sky Sports+.
Article 48 “blocked hours” will not apply during International Break weekends. Before the season started, the EFL, with the Premier League, nominated applicable dates to submit to UEFA, via the
    Football Association.

    TV Highlights

ITV will show highlights of the Sky Bet Championship, Sky Bet League One, Sky Bet League Two, Carabao Cup and the Bristol Street Motors Trophy across the 2024/25 season. The ITV Highlights Show will provide a comprehensive round-up of all the day’s action from across the EFL will be screened in the primetime slot on Saturday at 9pm on ITV4, with a repeat being shown on
    ITV later in the evening.

    Radio

talkSPORT will offer exclusive live commentaries on national radio across the Sky Bet EFL as well as non-exclusive rights to the Carabao Cup that are shared by the BBC. Both TalkSPORT and the BBC have the ability to broadcast score flash updates across all competitions.

    International TV Audiences

Fans outside of the UK will be able to continue watching their favourite team in all EFL competitions via Club platforms, where matches are not being broadcast exclusively.

I'm not overly sure what to make of all this to be honest. From a purely personal point of view, this probably means that I can now watch 3 more Barnsley games than previously, as work means I barely get to see us live without using holidays etc. Over the course of the season I'll probably benefit, having already got Sky Sports, so in a way I'm pretty pleased with that element of it.

Overall however, I don't see this as being particularly good for the match going fan and attendances. In fact it could be described as atrocious. Attendances seem to have resisted the many issues that negatively effect the match going supporter and in the Championship especially, I'm astounded by the sheer numbers of away fans that continue to attend every week, right across the division. A big part of that though is the ability to make a day of it, have a few beers, basically just have a bit of a blow out with the match added in. I know loads of fans who go more for the day out and a social laugh with mates than the actual game. They care about the game and they want Barnsley to win, but the day out is the main attraction. But that main attraction is a lot less attractive when the match is suddenly a different day, scheduled at an inconvenient time, possibly without the possibility of a viable train route back. The question is, how many fans will still want to trek across the country, pay the ticket and travel costs, but have to put up with a rubbish kick off time, especially when it's on TV. On the opening weekend Swindon travel to newly promoted Chesterfield for a Friday night game, which is a pretty decent match to start off with. I reckon that's a sell out for both sides on a Saturday, but how many Swindon fans will want to trek up the M1 on a Friday night for it now? How many more Mansfield fans would have hopped on the train or a pub bus for a 3pm game at Oakwell than will want to rush about after work for a Friday night kick off? How many Barnsley fans will swerve an unattractive first round cup game at Wigan now it's on TV? Stockport would have doubtless brought 3500 fans for a Saturday 3pm game, but how many will think nah we'll stay in a Stockport pub and watch it on TV now it's kicking off at night?

I reckon we will start to see reduced numbers travelling, which is a shame.
The new set up seems tailor made for the armchair fan, but a total pain in the bum for match going supporters. I'm not totally against it and increased exposure and access to the smaller clubs for fans is a good thing in many ways. But I don't see any benefits at all for those fans who attend regularly.

So, generally I think this will reduce attendances, particularly away support with the resulting reduction in atmosphere.
However, it appears it won't affect BFC as I can't see any mention of us amongst the televised games. Admittedly I haven't trawled through all that sky guff.

The section at the top where it states select a club, if you put Barnsley in it comes up no matches. We must no longer be an EFL club!

It's Mansfield at home, Friday night, 1st game of the season.

Stockport at home, Saturday night, 28th Sept.

    Every midweek game.

Wigan in the Carabao Cup, first midweek of the season.

Midweek ones are on Sky Sports plus, not sure about the weekend ones.

Great question, I'd not thought of that, we get it through Now too.

Is iFollow still available for overseas viewing?

    Anyone, cough, @Archey ?

Yes, Sky sports+ will be available on Now TV. I've definitely read that on the club site.

Think it's £14.99 for a 24 hour pass, or £26.99 for a monthly pass (going up to £34.99 after 6 months).

Unsure about overseas viewers. Think the club alluded to it in one of the articles.

    Edit: from the article above.

Just beware that the £26 offer is actually a 6 month minimum term - it's not obvious from the large print but it says in the Ts & C's:

"NOW Sports Month Membership £26 a month - 6-month minimum term: After the minimum term ends, your Sports membership auto renews at £34.99 a month unless cancelled. Cancel anytime effective after the minimum term ends."

Cheers for that. I thought that might be the case, but I hadn't had a proper look into it.
