Who are the golden generation. May I suggest anyone who remembers England winning the world cup, because I don't think the likes of it will ever shine on us again.

Find a manager who can pick a side and we’ll be there. Our opportunities under Southgate was World Cup 2018 and Euros when we lost to Italy. Since then, he’s been quite poor and as much as you make your own luck, we’ve had our fair share. The fact is everytime Southgate came across a decent side, he didn’t really ever know what to do.

Ultimately we’ve had pretty straightforward runs to both the euro finals and WC semi. I don’t think we’ve won a game we’ve not been expected to win.

It’s the same problem we had with the last golden generation. Trying to shoehorn all our best players into one team. He couldn’t get the best out of Foden and Bellingham in the same team and the lack of runners in behind made Kane ineffective.

He had six tournament matches to sort it out but aside from deciding on Mainoo and Shaw coming back from injury, the team selection was the same every match.

If you’re playing Kane, play Saka and Gordon high and wide like the Spanish. Gordon didn’t even get one minute.

If you want Bellingham and Foden in advanced positions, play Watkins or Toney through the middle.

I think possibly the worst part was the number of times Pickford played it long to Kane. Kane didn’t win it once, and even if he had we didn’t have any runners on beyond him. Change it? No chance.

The lack of ideas or willingness to change it is just symptomatic of Southgate’s approach. Safety first. Don’t do anything rash.
