Does anyone know what crop this is?
In a particularly wet early summer the Rapeseed failed. After the field was ploughed, I guess the farmer started again and every day I've been walking the dog, scratching my head. IMG_20240720_073816.jpg

I'd say sweetcorn / maize but it looks a bit widely spaced

    Looks a bit like sweetcorn.
I’m not even a gardener though, so I’m probably a mile off.

Maybe, but I've never seen any growing around here before.

If you're anywhere near it and you're scratching your head then be afraid, be very afraid. It's not of this world. It can lead to madness. One scratch and you are infected with all kinds of alien palsy.
Unfortunately it is just maize/corn on the cob in its baby stage.

Maybe having to do something different because of a short and/or late growing period after the first crop failed.

It's quite a common crop around our way. It's used a lot for animal feed, apparently.

Isn’t it the crop that looks like corn, but doesn’t produce the ear of corn. I believe it’s used for animal feed.

A lot of fields round us in Lincolnshire grow this and in autumn when it is ripe I nick a couple of cobs to eat.
It is vile. Inedible. Doesn't cook like the ones you buy in the shops to eat, so it is obviously an animal feed variety.

If it is Maize, they've been growing it in Wath in the recent past.

May well be the case; my youngest daughter recently mentioned a few cases at school.

Maize but don't try to eat it, it's fodder :)
