With supply Watters and Cosgrove will come good. It's Marsh, Dyer and Jalo that have to take their chance. There's a good chance we'll start with Cosgrove and Watters anyway so if we manage to sign that striker he'd be signing as backup. As for left back. Can't Lofthouse play there?
I think it was always likely we'd go back in for him. We'll have probably put a low offer in to test their resolve, though it's one I'd like to see us get done sooner rather than later, as I think he's probably got a bit of interest in him, given his age and goals record last season. For me, it's a signing that takes us from top 6 hopefuls again, to being able to mount a top 2 challenge. He'd be our Dion Charles, Alfie May or Paddy Lane. A talismanic figure. This season's Kieffer Moore or Sam Winnall. It's something I think we've missed, probably since Carlton Morris.
If Watters comes good I’ll be absolutely delighted but the odds on that are up there with Shergar and Elvis being sighted.
Couldn't agree more. When you look at his stats from last season and how important he was to Mansfield going up it is so obvious how good he is. He would be our statement signing and push us up a level. Not just just high goal and assist tally, but his dribbling stats and how he was able to create space and chances for himself and others. Plus over 100 key passes last season too. If his colleagues up top were as good at finishing as he was he could have easily had a lot more than 10 assists too. How he did not win L2 POTY I don't know, basically topped every chart last season
Guessing cos Jones at Notts County was smashing records that were held by Kane, De Bruyne & Henry for assists would get the headlines
If he’s as good as some are making out then I just can’t see us stumping up the required cash to have a bid accepted. Mansfield will want top dollar for him.
And if he's as good as statistics suggest, I would be very surprised if there were not interest in him from Championship clubs. Furthermore, would the player not regard a move to us as a sideways move?
Although we are in same league it is still a step up for him. We have been in top 6 last two seasons and will be expected to be there again. This is the first season at this level for Mansfield for some time and they will be expected to be down nearer the bottom end that the top end.
Probably in the same way that Conor and Bree regarded going to Villa as a sideways move. Club in the same division but streets apart by way of potential, and presumably wages.
'Expected' ....... maybe. But. They have a decent manager and have momentum of a good season to carry forward, a great away following, a proven gaffer, some decent signings, a team bonding trip to the Algarve and last two friendlies have been 6-0 and 7-0. They will be buzzing come opening day, and a good August and September could see them as a surprise package.
I'm hoping he gets some positive aggression coached into him. None of this jumping in blind / afraid and certainly none of this leading with the elbow. Hopefully he will thrive under a positive new caoch and we can see some confidence back in his game to go with his undoubted talent. Fingers crossed. He could quickly disappear into non-league.
And we beat Port Vale 7-0 last year and soon after our home form was crap for the remainder or the season.
I would imagine (without actually knowing) that, in the case of Hourihane and Bree, the difference between Villa's wage offer and ours would be huge, even though Gauthier said Patrick Cryne offered Hourihane £14k a week to sign a new deal. I can believe that we probably pay more than Mansfield, on average, but the difference will surely be nowhere near the Villa-Barnsley comparison.
