James Cleverly is the first to make a move. He wouldn't confirm or deny on GMB this morning if he would be running, but this video will have been made a while ago.
Bad choice. I’m probably stating the obvious here but anyone that isn’t white isn’t winning an election in this country. It may happen in the future but not in the next few years.
He's as good a candidate as anyone else they have to offer. I'd still vote for binface ahead of any of them
I disagree with that, perhaps naively, but I think a person of colour could become PM. Though, if they're Muslim, I think that's where I would agree with you. There's rampant bigotry at the moment. Is Kemi still favourite? There's certainly some scary names on those lists.
I'm just so glad we voted out the Tories, they were quickly becoming that way and it enabled a lot of BNP types to come out in the open. Hopefully they'll get forcefully shoved back under their rocks again
My money is on a membership vote-off between Olukemi, Sue Ellen and a "wet" like Tom Tugenhat and the collective membership all suffering an aneurysm as a result.
You’re right it is there’s loads of countries where someone of colour couldn’t even be the equivalent of a MP but someone of mixed race isn’t winning an election in this country. I could be wrong but I don’t believe I am. I feel like Brexit, Farage’s popularity, Johnson’s popularity in comparison to Sunak all back the argument up. Of course there’s other factors at play. There’s no doubt the Tories hit self destruct but I don’t see a black or Asian MP being able to win enough swing seats to ever win an election at the present time.
My approach to Tory leadership contests, and we've all seen enough of them lately to merit our own approach, is to accept up front that anyone who makes me think "Oh, they wouldn't be so bad" is never going to get the job.
I immediately ruled Tom Tugendhat out when he stood for those exact reasons. Centrist, articulate, and seemingly sane. No chance.
I really think it will be Jenrick. He's a chinless gutter rat with no morals and content to do and say anything. So he's ideal as a tory leader! He has to navigate the parliamentary party. Then the rabid far right membership. I think he's more likely to do the latter than former, but the remaining centrists seem to be higher in number than right wingers and I could see him getting to the final two tactically to block Badenoch. One other grim bit of tittle tattle that says so much about the tories and their self entitlement... A large number of tories who kept their seats are effectively squatting in their old offices in westminster because they don't want to move to smaller offices or have to walk as far to vote. As I say, grim.
https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/29529264/suella-braverman-withdraws-conservative-party-leader-race/ Sad news for BBSers who are Tory members, as you can't now vote for Cruella.
We're at least 2 away from the actual Tory leader. The next 2 will be lame ducks to appease different wings of the party but get nothing done. Then if they're lucky the next William Hague will come along to unify and rebuild. Hopefully not though. They'll probably end up going all in on Farage
