It's only an advantage though if they spend it wisely. A lot of teams have found it difficult to get out of this division in the past because they've hoovered up the best players, and then not played a system to suit them. Ipswich and Sunderland for example. Of course, they've done alright since, but how many millions had they both burned through before they finally got out of this division.
Given Boltons passed financial history is this a wise move to gamble on trying to buy your way out of the league
Yeah having millions to spend on a Lg One team, isn't a definite way to success of course, its got to be spent wisely. But it surely makes it a damn sight harder for the rest of us, who don't have that amount.
Something like that, and from memory, he was in the last few months of his contract. They'd signed him to try and guarantee promotion.
Obviously, but having the biggest budget doesn't guarantee promotion. I'd say Ipswich had probably one of the 3 biggest budgets in the league all of the time they were in this division, and they finished 11th, 9th and 11th again before finally getting out. Charlton splashed the cash last summer, and finished 16th. The issue with a lot of the cash rich sides in the past is that they've gone out, hoovered up 3 league 1 goalscorers, and then not had any idea on how to get the best out of them, because they've not used any of that budget to improve the supply line. That being said, I expect Bolton to be the side to beat this year. In spite of Ian Evatt, who I don't think is a very good coach.
If there’s 4 clubs spending silly amounts then it will inevitably lead to serious financial problems for at least one of them. @twillo do you have a link to the story please ?
Wages are the key. Transfer fees are a nice headline but having extra money on the wage budget is where it matters.
yes, overtime the correlation between wage bill and league position is mathematically proven. Interestingly its not so much for transfer fees paid - but is for wage bill - because its obviously possible to spaff a load of cash on a transfer which is doggers, but generally if you have high wages you attract better players in the long run.
Recent history shows that since the season we went up a team with out a ‘best’ budget has been promoted with last season the exception since Luton went up as champions.
