Barnsley FC are delighted to announce that Luca Connell has been made club captain ahead of the 2024-25 season. The 23-year old Irish midfielder is entering his third season with the Reds, having made over 70 appearances over the last two years following his arrival from Celtic, and agreed a four-year contract extension with the club last summer, to keep him at Oakwell until 2027. Seems we’ve deliberately kept the number 1 shirt free. Jackson Smith wore 22 at Walsall last year so doubt it’s a superstitious thing.
Correct decision. Key player, been here a few years and under contract long term. Much better than last season having someone running down their contract.
Seems to be a couple of youngsters been given first team numbers. Does this normally happen or is it an indicator of who might be involved more this season?
Noticed that too. Newsbot is going to expose the spelling, grammatical and other mistakes this season if it continues to populate the article within the thread. They can edit the site but can’t edit the Newsbot thread posts…
Correct decision. I feel like if he’d have not missed the first few months of last season, he may well have got it before now.
Also interesting they've given Hayton a number. Three keepers, plus Flavell who could be called on in an emergency and supposedly another young kid being targeted on loan. I do think we could manage our limited resources much more wisely.
Is there still a difference between team captain and club captain. Or do they just mean the same thing?
I feel sure that this was going to be announced with his new contract this time last year, but his illness meant that he wouldn't be available for quite a while. Good choice by the club. He is vocal and a leader on the pitch. I hope that Roberts and Hourihane give him 100% support as well.
Yes they can. I can’t give examples but I’m sure players have lost their number before and been given something much lower down. I think most would agree that Josh has had enough chances and it’s time he was moved on. I’d have given the 10 shirt to Matty Craig
