Unfortunately some love spewing their negativity and misery on everyone else and we just have to have it infect this Barnsley fc supporters forum and accept it.
I get we all have things that the club does that disappoints and frustrate us and I would for one be really dissapointed if Cosgrove and Watters were the best pair come the close of the window. We all would have liked our business to be done and dusted but let's see what the next few days brings.
At the end of the day the club's skint. The fact that the owners are bailing us out should tell you. Until wealthy investors turn up or we start filling the ground with 20k crowds week in week out we're not going out buying the players we want. So with this in mind if we don't recruit 2 quality strikers before the end of the window I suggest we don't loan other clubs waste and strays, we throw our young players into the mix let them gain the experience they need or let them sink, otherwise shut the academy save the money to invest next season in new players. But would you supporters accept mid table football for a couple of seasons.
Interesting take on things. Certainly something has to be done if the slide is to be stopped. The board have to show some nerve I think. They have to pump money in and/or get more focused on recruitment and, I would say, keep the academy. They're under pressure to do summat that's for sure. If they sit on their hands we'll drift further. Board need to come good now. Spectamur Agendo (dint have a spell check...)
AFAIA it really doesn't matter how wealthy the owners are does it? I thought clubs could only spend whatever they generated as income now? Moreso in leagues one and two? Have I got that wrong? If that is the case, the only way we progress is to start to attract more fans, or those stay-aways (which I understand) come back for the betterment of the Club in the long run. It's a hell of a lot less hassle to watch Barnsley matches on the dodgy stick, but the Club is dying financially. I honestly believe that. People get fed up of hearing that we're a L1 club and the constant bleating about having no money. But the more I think about it, they can't all be lying. The club needs to generate more capital, or the league needs to actually implement stringent wage caps that actually stave off the seemingly unavoidable oblivion for at least 70% of the pyramid. I want us to sign DKD, I want us to sign two proven strikers, but if rumours of DKD wanting 7.5K a week to come, then frankly, he can stay and rot in Mansfield. Paying someone £360,000 a year at this level is ridiculous. The wage cap should be as follows; Premier League : 100K a week Championship : 20K a week League 1 : 5K a week (limited to 4 players per squad) everyone else on less. League 2 : 2.5K a week (same as above) Academy players at any level : 500 a week (They're children FFS) That represents, in my opinion, a suitable amount of money for the player, a workable budget for the teams, an incentive for players to better themselves and surely, a cheaper match day price for the paying public. I'm happy to discuss it?
I don’t really understand our recruitment. We still lack what we lacked at the end of last season. The weakest regular starter in our first 11 was in my opinion O’Keefe. He’s still playing. We massively lacked a plan B. The whole squad was built around 3-5-2 & we didn’t have a winger or even forwards who are comfortable playing wide in a 3 up top to change things up. We still haven’t addressed that. However we already had one quality holding midfielder in Connell & decent back up in Russell & then we’ve gone & signed Craig & Hourihane who play the same position. We’ve also signed two goalkeepers & the manager seems to prefer Killip to Smith. So why have we signed two & not just one? Roberts has signed but I struggle to see him & Pines in the same side. I don’t think either can be a ball playing centre back & play as the RCB or LCB. The only signing that makes perfect sense is Gent. We were in desperate need of a left wing back & we got one. This isn’t just being negative it’s a genuine bafflement at our recruitment. I’ve struggled to see what we’re aiming for ever since the mad summer when we signed Oulare & Leya Iseka. People have suggested recruitment was hindered because of Conway which it no doubt was but I don’t think it’s much better now.
Agree to certain extent but especially when a new manager is involved he should have his players before big kick off
It would be nice but not always possible. In fairness we've done most of our recruitment with just another couple to come in all being well.
Not sure who your trying to convince here, yourself or other people..Clarke as already said we've missed targets. Last season finished 4 months ago and we've haven't pulled many trees up and theres only 3 weeks left now. Whoever comes in, they are hardly likely to admit that the player we finally landed was halfway down page 2 on our list. End of the day we'll get the best we can.. And that hopefully they are better than we already have. This squad in my mind and i'm sure a lot will agree is not good enough at present for a play off/promotion push.. One or two have said they think this may be a transition season. Unfortunately they may be right.... But then the question arises.. are we as a club and fan base prepared give Clarke a free hit this season..?
Brilliant summary. Sums my feelings up too with regards to recruitment. We just never seem to have a structured plan.
I feel it’s a season of transition which is ok if we can see the direction we’re trying to go in, particularly in terms of recruitment. Hopefully it is transition and not the start of a steady decline.
We're transitioning downwards. I agree about the Hourihane signing. He doesn't fit in with Russell, Connell and Craig being here. Wouldn't be surprised if someone is sold. Too many players on the books in the wrong areas.
Would be great, for sure. A fox in the box, which we don't really have in the squad. I also reckon, seeing as we already have Craig on loan from Tottenham, we would do well to pursue Will Lankshear, who is a young striker already cutting the mustard. Another season-long loan would be good.
Brilliant post this. I am confident about clarke he seems assured but I think it might take him 2/3 windows to get us anything like and to give us some playing identity.
It’s very convenient to blame Conway for everything. The board mainly comprises of exactly the same people just a swap of voting alliances is the difference so not really the case we can absolve them from blame There’s a lot of exaggeration in this thread but in essence I’d agree with the sentiment that we are a poorly run club with some elements being pretty shambolic. Recruitment Isn’t an exact science and we miss as many as we hit but we seem to be caught in a doom loop of not getting our targets then having a complete last minute punt on anyone that can run
Not trying to convince anybody. All clubs have a target list with several options.Clarke himself said some targets had chosen Championship clubs over us,I don't see a problem.
Your problem is if you are near the end of the window scrambling around taking anything. We aren’t there yet and hopefully won’t be but there is a distinct possiblity and the HC is clearly frustrated. You have to move on quickly if that’s what you are gonna do
