I thought he did well yesterday. Scored a really good goal and won a lot of aerial duels. Can’t ask much more really. 4 goals in his last 5 games is a sound base to build from.
A lot of decisions go against him in games, the majority of which are unwarranted. He likes the physical side of the game and I would like to start seeing referees give him the benefit of the doubt at times
Didn't Steve Cooper have a similar problem? IIRC refs often just seemed to decide he must have fouled the defender (probably because he jumped so high). Some players' games just seem to fit the profile of a foul, even when there isn't one.
I've noticed sometimes he over focuses on getting a foul, not saying some of them aren't fouls either but when he doesn't get the decisions, which is beyond ridiculous at times, he starts to just drift within the game rather than re-focusing. I actually think he's too honest, his Size goes against him, he gives the defender some back suddenly its a foul. Needs to start hitting the deck a bit more for me from all the shirt pulls instead of standing up and appealing
Just look at how nicely he took that half chance though, a really neat curler into the far corner. He didn't need to blast it, he just hit it really well. If that was Killian Hhmbopp scoring a goal like that, the commentators would be having to clean up quite a lot of mess afterwards.
This I agree with. Watters does it too. It drives me mad when a striker is looking at the man when the ball is coming towards him in the air, and then looks bewildered when the decision goes against them. It gives the referee an easy decision, as it looks like they're not trying to play the ball. It's certainly one reason why Cosgrove gets so few decisions. Paul Hayes used to do it, and Cauley Woodrow.
Not all about how many touches though mate. It’s where they are and what they result in. One of them was a goal, and if he was also making clearances, he’s helping his defence.
The Classic , was where their goaly made a right hash of his taking the ball, spilled it, dived into Cozzy, ref blows for a foul on keeper. Unbelievable jeff
I stated the stats to show how little Cosgrove was involved from an attacking perspective. I agree that Cosgrove had a decent game especially from a defensive aspect and you can't criticise your striker when they score with such little service. I would have liked him to link up the play and be involved more offensively though this probably highlights how poor we were in possession.
Get our strikers, all league refs and the professional laying downer at Bolton in a teams call with macca and Albert rennison. "Get up lad"
He'll know we are after other forwards and like Maxiboy will have play at a consistent level to keep their place..
I remember an excellent article in the South Riding fanzine - "Steve Cooper's Masterclass". @Jimmy viz I'm guessing you still have a copy?
