Chelsea had lowest crowds of 6k+ 1982 and 83. Our average was more than than theirs in 82. And in the 80s we lost many fans because of the strike. Some having got out of the habit of going to games.
We needed promotion to the top flight in the eighties. Better equipped back then. In 1997 we were tourists and squandered the riches the club got. Hindsight's a wonderful thing though but maybe spend the money better not build the North Stand so soon and not go for Hendrie as manager.
It was well hairy! The police received a standing ovation when they got everyone back to their coaches unscathed. I'd settle for a Derek Bell lol.
I did wonder if it was sarcasm. I should’ve know. Sorry! I struck a nerve because I’ve heard a lot of ex players say they feel sorry for them and it’s annoying me!
Our average attendance in 1981-2 was 15,098, the 3rd highest in Division Two. Chelsea's was 13,132, the 7th highest.
Question... Which First Division (now the Premier league) team, were the first to be relegated via the Play offs ?. It was Chelski, in season '87. They did go straight back up again, but what a totally different club they are now, compared to then.
Yes, you are right. That one season in the 80s, I was just generalising bud. Odd couple of seasons we competed with attendance, majority we didn't
Apart from the fact that we averaged more than Chelsea in 81-2, it seems odd today that our 15098 figure was the 3rd highest in the second tier, when it would not even be in the top half of Championship average attendances these days.
