Barnsley Football Club is pleased to announce the acquisition of Stephen Humphrys, the forward penning a one-year deal, with a further one-year option. The 26-year-old arrives at Oakwell as a free agent after a three-year spell with Wigan Athletic, scoring eleven goals last campaign for the Latics as a wide forward. Our new recruit started his career with Fulham, progressing through the ranks and featuring for the Whites in the Championship. Making over 200 appearances during his professional career, Humphrys won the Sky Bet League One title with Wigan, playing 38 times during the 2021/22 promotion season. On his arrival in South Yorkshire, the attacker expressed his excitement on taking on a new challenge with the Reds. "I'm really happy to be here, I feel like it has been a long time coming really to get it sorted," he began. "I've weighed up my options throughout the summer and decided that this is the place I want to be. I spoke to the manager, and to be honest, it didn't really take much convincing for me. I know that Barnsley is a great club and shouldn't be in this league. "I just wanted to make sure that my goals of wanting to get promotion align with the club that I joined, and this definitely does. This is a club that should be in the Championship at the bare minimum." Sporting Director, Mladen Sormaz, commented on the Reds’ new addition: “We are delighted to be able to bring Stephen to the Club, adding his technical and physical attributes to the squad as well as his League One experience. “Stephen is a physical presence at the top of the pitch and offers versatility along the forward line which will allow us to be adaptable during games. We wish him all the best during his time at Oakwell.” Welcome to Oakwell, Stephen Humphrys! Continue reading...

Here's a comment taken from the club's Facebook post about the deal... "Wow, window open for 3 months and now we are supposed to be delighted with a deal with hours to spare."
I suspect that's because we are paying him quite a fair whack and don't want to run the risk of a very long contract. It's also quite likely that he prefers a shorter contract, so he can negotiate himself another good one when it's over.
Seems a good last minute low risk deal for the club, hopefully we get a player that improves us whilst keeping our options open about next season.
