A true legend of English cricket, another record taken today with yet another ton at Lords, I've watched this man steadily go about his business from the very start and to say he's the epitome of calmness and patience is an understatement, this is further enhanced along with his obvious skill set the fact that he is a thoroughly decent fellow and a truly brilliant role model he is rightly lauded as our best ever batsman.

Nothing to add to this Del Rosso. I can’t say any more than he’s unquestionably the best batsman in Yorkshire and Englands history. Just enjoying him as we may never see the like again.

Just to add, he came down to a local cricket club in Wakefield to help out and support the food bank they started there - Calder Grove CC - he really is a decent bloke.

Even the Lutaarn fans were saying how good he is, as an England batsman (yeah I scanned their board a bit after that Woodrow thread lol).
I wonder when he'll play for us Yorkies again though!.

totally agree - brilliant cricketer ....... and all credit for challenging homophobia ......

''Joe Root has been hailed as a “role model” for standing up to alleged homophobic remarks during the third Test between England and the West Indies in St Lucia.
The England captain responded after an incident with fast bowler Shannon Gabriel, stating: “There is nothing wrong with being gay.”

Aye, that one is a test of longevity though. It’s the only record that’s some way off.

Best English batsman of all time?
Not seen em all obviously but he is a contender.
The only shot he hasn’t got is the slog

Many years ago remember Boycott saying on TMS that Joe would be something special. He was right. I'm proud to call him a fellow Yorkshireman.

Alastair Cook for me. Opening the batting is the hardest thing to do in cricket. Facing the oppositions best bowlers (usually) with a new ball is a very difficult thing to do and he scored lots and lots of runs.

Root is a fantastic batter and I’m not downplaying how good he is but Cook just shades it for me.

I always thought Graham Gooch was one of the best at that, as well.

Same. It's harder to play a new ball with the best bowlers. Coming in with a few down it's usually with a softer ball against slightly lesser bowlers.

He was annoying today though. We were hanging on and hanging on, hoping to see him get his century before the Reds kicked off, but we had to turn the footy on with him on 99!
