That means nothing mate, at start of every season there’s always strong starters that finish nowhere…. Mansfield for instance
Great start when you consider how many on here felt pessimistic about our chances this season(me included)…. nice to have a positive perspective from BBS posters this weekend, we doing ok
Mansfield apart, we seem to get off to some great dominating starts. Unfortunately, we're not converting many of the chances we make during this period, which sometimes comes back to bite us in the arse. Currently, as in previous seasons, we are falling off near the end of games, which is costing us. If we can start to convert the early chances to put games to bed, which with recent signings I believe we can, and to tighten up the last quarter of the game, which I believe will happen as the defense plays more together, then the sky is the limit (i.e. promotion and a good cup run).
I don’t want to get too carried away, and don’t want to compare with other league one reds squads, but I’m very positive about how we’ve started and what we have at our disposal. I see the return of Marc Roberts to the club as a real coup. Brings championship experience, ability and his age doesn’t look to have compromised him. I don’t think anything needs to be said about the midfield, other than we can even manage really well without Hourihane. Who would have expected that when we signed him?
Team or squad? There were players like Otis Khan & Jak McCourt in the 2016 squad who were regulars on the bench for months in the second half of the season. In 2019 Ben Williams played quite a bit, even Jordan Green got on a few times. I don’t think we had great depth. It was quite a small squad. I think we’ve definitely got a better squad now, there’s far more depth to it. The 2nd team would be significantly better than the 2nd teams in 2016 or 19 but the first eleven this season is nowhere near as good as the first elevens in 16 or 19. So better squad but the first team is nowhere near as strong.
Not as good as the Clarke Hunter team that was the best we have probably ever had at this level. Nowhere near 2016 or 2019. Probably slightly worse than Duffs team but heaps of potential and what looks to be a good blend.
Might just be Kane leaving. I’m a fan of both, but sometimes you suit playing with some players better than others.
Connell and Russell both look to play forward as does (Hourihane when he plays). I think Kane slowed us down at times. Not taking away from his shot or passing but didn't get on front foot enough.
