In December 2023 there were 10,423 foreigners in prison, in England and Wales.

That's 12% of the total prison population, so you'd have thought that deportation would free up a fair number of places, to relieve the pressure.

I'm surprised nobody has suggested that we shoot the worst prisoners until we have enough capacity again

Do we release them before, or after, they serve their sentence? Or are we releasing say a murderer or rapist from say Ireland who can then just walk across the border to live in the UK again free?

Given how inefficient the Home Office has been rendered by the previous government, the same could apply to any prisoner released to any EU country...

Lots will be tagged. Lots will be low category.
Where shall we put the most serious offenders during the riots. ?
What is the tories answer to this situation that has got out of hand re accommodation.
Some proper Wum activities this morning.

    For Ballance.
The Conservatives released 10,000 prisoners early to ease the jail capacity crisis, according to figures released ahead of the new Labour government setting out more drastic steps to reduce the prison population. Figures published by the Ministry of Justice on Friday revealed the number of prisoners let out between October 17 and June 30 under the End of Custody Supervised Licence scheme.

I think there’s just got to be common sense applied. It’s all well & good acting the hard man giving long sentences to rioters but if we don’t have the prison space & it results in violent criminals & sex offenders getting out early then is it worth it?

Someone I work withs mate got 2 years 4 months for throwing things & shouting abuse. He hasn’t hurt anyone but he’s now going to be away from his Mrs & young kid whilst we’ve got serious criminals getting out early.

Don’t get me wrong the bloke was an idiot for going & getting involved & I could understand making an example of him (& others) if we had the prison space but in the current scenario? It just doesn’t add up.

A suspended sentence & a threat that if you attend a single protest / march of any kind within a certain time period & it’ll mean you’re getting sent down & will be apart from your Mrs & young child would be far more suitable in my opinion.

He had a clean record too by the way. I think standards should be different for repeat offenders.

I’m not a fan of Starmer and didn’t vote for ‘his’ changed Labour Party at the GE. But I’m not having any of the criticism levelled at him in his short tenure as PM so far. It’s just not washing for me.

Seems - as expected - the current government (after just a couple of months) are getting stick for trying to fix the mess of the last lot.

It took some people 14 years to wake up to the fact that the Tories were *****. Keir and co have had 70 days or whatever it is.

Your mate is a "serious criminal". He pled guilty to public order offences at a protest that turned into a riot. If he was throwing things, he could have serious hurt or killed someone.

He should have thought about his family before he made the decision to go, followed by the decisions to throw things and shout abuse. The anger that he demonstrated doesn't come from nowhere. Most people don't normally just go from 0 to 100 like that. The chances are, he already had a criminal record or hadn't previously been caught.

A government making tough decisions and not popular ones will do for me.

UK Tax receipts in 2022/3 were £827 billion compared to £315 billion on 2000/1.
Tax people more? since 2007 an additional 1.1million people have been pushed into the top tax bracket by the cut in the higher tax threshold, and the increases in personal allowance have lifted many lower income earners out of the starting tax bracket. the effect of relying on a smaller number of people to pay Tax is that if you have a growth in employment, but not a growth in earnings then total tax is less - more people in lower paid jobs means less money for the government.
Also corporate tax receipts are set to increase to about 3.2% of GDP - the highest since 1989-90.

Unfortunately the Govt now spends over a trillion £ a year.
We spend £124 billion on the state pension, £83 billion on Universal credit and £35 billion on disability benefits. - 28% of all government spending is on Social welfare.
20% on the NHS - another £245 billion
    and 11% on education - £131 billion.

government finances have not really recovered since the crash in 2009 and then COVID. To build more prisons you need staff, and that takes years of planning - something which is sadly lacking. Unfortunately, and money - are you going to agree to cut the benefits above? The only way is to let people our early, or just not put people in Jail in the first place except for the most violent offences.

I think some kind of running man style game in the badlands of a dystopian city scape - Birmingham perhaps? Might work well.

I dont like Starmer for lots of reasons. However, the prisons and justice system generally are in a terrible state because of the Tories. Its the Tories to blame for this not Labour. The Tories have ruined the country not Labour. After 5 weeks of Labour government even I think Starmer needs cutting slack on this. If people are still being sent to prison and there is no space left (because of the Tories!) what else is the guy supposed to do?

I share the sense of schadenfreude, don't get me wrong, but is it really necessary for us to be making space for all the racists to do a 3 month stretch for shouting at a police dog/lobbing eggs etc?
