Me and my Wife have talked for a while about wanting to move up north - in and around the Barnsley area - but don't really know where to start, so we're after some advice! Would love my little girl (18 months old) to grow up in that part of the world Firstly, any areas people would recommend or suggest we avoid? We are home owners and both work full time; should I look at jobs or houses first? I am a training manager at a Morrisons manufacturing site; could potentially look to transfer if a job came up (loads of Morrisons sites up north) or look at other places of work So yeah, any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Wath is ok and Barnbrough/Harlington and Wentworth. Avoid Goldthorpe and Thurnscoe unless your daughter is 6 foot and built like a brick shthouse.
There are some great places/ villages in and around Barnsley. Like anywhere else there are good and bad. It won’t be at all difficult to find somewhere suitable
I am honestly shocked that you've just put wath in the same category as barnbrough, harlington and Wentworth.
Loads of decent villages in Barnsley. Anywhere west of M1 eg Dodworth, Silkstone, Silkstone Common, Cawthorne, Hoylandswaine, Ingbirchworth etc. Ardsley, Staincross, Billingley, Birdwell, Tankersley even parts of Darfield, Wombwell Hemingfield, Hoyland Hoyland Common and Royston are OK. It's a very friendly town with not many rough areas.
Your budget without wanting to pry. Would be a major factor. Owt from 70k ready to move into and £200k would get you summat that would cost £1m + in london. £500k take your pick barring some select ones I'd scan the properties for sale. And then ask about the area..then no one can know your wealth or not as the case may be bar you. Do you prefer the idyllic life of the countryside. Rural (Not for me but each to their own.) Or a little more active. Nice village area with a couple of pubs etc and plenty of facilities, schools close by etc. Or a full on townie everything on the doorstep. If Morrisons do transfers theirs one in town and one on the Barnsley- Rotherham border. A retail park now where once stood Cortonwood main, The beginning of the strike. Some nice villages round there as well.
Thurnscoe & Goldthorpe are ok, I have a lot of friends & Family that live there & they are decent & honest folk, like most people that live there. Like anywhere else they have problems, but don't be put off.
Not sure what you mean. It's just like picking university, you go to one of the greats. Oxford, Cambridge, Hull.
Would absolutely 100% recommend these places, especially harlington. Got a few relatives that live in Barnbrough and Harlington. My parents moved there a year or so ago and absolutely love it. It's such a great little village
If you are looking to live in the country 4/5 mile out of Barnsley town try Cawthorne, Silkstone, High Hoyland, Hood Green, and Wentworth. Built-up areas worth a look Wombwell, Penistone, Darfield, Dodworth, and the Town itself.
