Two paper rounds and a Saturday job in a butcher's. First proper job was in the warehouse at Empire Stores in Wakefield - started the week after I left uni.
During my school years i went around getting coal in for a few bob and also went with the local fishmonger to Grimsby two mornings a week. Proofreader on leaving school. After a couple of years went into the building trade and worked my way up.
First job, weekends at Little Chef on the A1 at Barnsdale Bar while in VI form. Student job, bingo caller in an arcade at St Osyth near Clacton. Loved that job. Summer holiday job - bar staff at Butlins in Minehead. 50 quid a week and free board and lodgings in a staff chalet. If you watched Hi-di-Hi and remember the staff digs like Ted and Spike's chalet, it was just like that. A shed with windows. First proper job - temp finance admin at Ferrybridge 'C' Power Station. I was there at the point the electricity generation system was privatised and Ferrybridge 'C' became part of PowerGen (remember them). The profit I made on the shares I was allowed to buy as staff paid off my student overdraft. Current job (for 27 years now) - Implementation Consultant for a software company delivering finance systems.
Yeah, great character and a great film, and a great big knife as well lol. It was originally going to be called Alligator Glasgow, which doesn't have the same appeal does it.
Not including collecting glasses at Whispers, my first job, after qualifying as a Registered General Nurse/Registered Sick Children’s Nurse was as a staff nurse in A&E at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. A lifetime ago! And now my job an employee benefits advisor for corporate clients, helping people to return to work or, if they can’t, helping them to receive benefits via their company insurance schemes. Except it’s not. I worked on for about 14 years after having a spinal cord tumour removed, until I couldn’t manage it any more, and now, ironically, I myself am a claimant on my company’s insurance scheme, going full circle, from collecting glasses to collecting sodding medical conditions.
First job Investigating complaints against Social workers in a pretty hardcore London Borough . (Lovely gentle introduction to the world of work). current job. Project managing construction site set ups. best job picking Mangos in Western Australia Worst job stuffing chickens. Best paid but most soul destroying job working for myself.
What was the strangest sight you saw in whispers? Was this in the days that Gerry Taggart was in every night?
Got to be up there with the best films of the 80s, third one was absolutely dogger though. If they can consider making a new Goonies film then there still be a chance of a return from Mick Dundee...... and Donk.
First job - as a volunteer at Oakwell helping behind the scenes on matchdays and in the Summer holidays. Paid job - Lifeguard, Metrodome. Now Community Engagement Manager. By far the dullest job was holiday cover at Lyons Cakes on the production line. One 8 hour shift I sat on a stool on the Granny Cake line. I had a stick in my hand, and if a cake got stuck, I had to knock it with the stick to move it on. For 8 hours. I think maybe 6 cakes got stuck.
First proper job after leaving school at 16 was Opthalmic Technician. Went through an electricians apprenticeship, press tool fitter, CNC engineer. Now, for last 18 years, a property lawyer.
Yeah mate, and I sometimes come up with threads about favourite 80s films on here (like I did with Highlander for example). Maybe soon, we should create a new one and take a nostalgic look back at good old Mick 'Croc' Dundee.
First job paper round for Jack Harston down Donny Rd left school Easter 1963 started at Coop Laundry Cundy Cross. Been retired 12 years and a week
It's a long time ago... I guess, when I was applying for a place at Uni, I was watching things like Butch Cassidy and The Sundance kid, The Sting, The Graduate, The Deer Hunter, One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, The Godfather, Dog Day Afternoon, Taxi Driver... but really, I didn't want to be covered in coal dust every day, and I wanted to do something cool. I wanted to go to uni, wear stripy tops, get drunk, listen to the Velvet Underground and sleep with neurotic art students. And I thought, f**k it, I might be from a Barnsley council estate but I can f****ing do this. But then, what really inspired me, was actually doing the course (a lot of it was at the TV and film museum in Bradford, where we had a proper TV studio and edit suite) and seeing films like Goodfellas and JFK, and, what took it to another level, Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. I was at Uni making films when those films came out, and they blew me away.
Warehouseman, 1983. Was a 10 week temp job that lasted over 3 years. Did 11 years in retail at B&Q Now in my 41st year of work I'm a UC Engineer / IT Consultant including 6 years self employed. My favourite spell of work was 2 years as a fork lift driver, 84-86. And my first year in retail in 88 when I met a stunning young checkout chick who would become Mrs Mac. Forty. One. *******. Years. No wonder I'm knackered.
First taste of work was a couple of paper rounds at school and working in a pub washing up at weekends with my mate. Left school and went to Catering College whilst working in local Hotels/Country Clubs. Eventually ended up joining the Navy (as a Chef) and served just over 17yrs. Within that time I’d also transferred to the RAF and left the service in 2013. Ran a kitchen in the Naval base here in Portsmouth until 2020. Hated working for the company who had the contract so finally left. For the past 4 years or so, I work as the Food Studies Lead at an independently registered school for children with SEN and SEMH needs, mostly ADHD and Autism. I deliver cooking lessons to all the students, but often it’s so much more than that. I suppose I also wanted to do something worthwhile and feel like I’m making a difference. It can be very mentally challenging more often than not, but the rewards far outweigh that. I’m a valued member of the team, don’t have to work weekends or BH’s and get all the school holidays off. Happy enough where I am for now and I can draw my military pension in 6yrs time, so will more than likely stay put.
I went to Wakefield College when I left school 43 yrs ago, I enrolled on a computer studies foundation course, but didn’t like it. Who knew computers would be such a thing? Had a few years on and off government schemes and was eventually offered a job placement with a local Painter & Decorator, which worked really well as he trained me up and got me into the trade. I’ve been self employed for over 30 yrs now. I’ve had my own apprentices and employees, but there’s just me to please now - and my customers…..
