First taste, stuffing copies of the Barnsley Advertiser through the letterboxes of Wombwell.

First proper job, Tesco at stairfoot. Will always remember my induction there. About a dozen of us new recruits sat in a room. In walks the HR manager with a bundle of contracts to hand out. Her opening line: "You'll all notice the wages on your contracts are 10% less than verbally agreed at interview. Anybody not happy with that, the door's over there"

What a fine employer to work for (35 years ago, mind you so hopefully changed for the better!)

At least most of us were students on part time pocket money jobs. 2 people in that room had left employment elsewhere for a more senior role and they took the news that they were being stiffed for 10% rather less well than the rest of us.

Last 30 years I've been in healthcare but due to my own health and family reasons, an indefinite hiatus starts next month.

Apart from a paper round in Houghton which I was sacked from because I couldn't get up on time once I left school, I did 2-3 years of glass collecting in Silvers and bar work in Whispers around the early 90s.

Placement year was operating a laser to put small holes in things (micron scale).

First proper job after uni was student registration at Bretton Hall.

Current job is IT Consultant for one of the big multinationals. Spent the last 2 years helping 2 Danish insurance firms split apart the remains of another large Scandinavian insurance firm. Not sure what the next assignment will be yet...

First job at 16 was glass collecting and waiting on at Dorothy Hyman in Cudworth.

I'm now an Administration Manager, via spells in a betting shop and dealing with PPI complaints.

My first job was in accountancy. I then evolved into strategic business consulting and was a Managing Director for about 20 years or so before retiring about a year and a half ago. I've just turned 50 and the last month or two I've started thinking I might want to do something else... But frankly I have no idea what that might be.

Qualified as a Diagnostic Radiographer in 1995 and first job was in X-Ray up at BDGH.

Left Barnsley in 2002 to specialise in MRI scanning, worked in quite a few roles and places, NHS and Independent Sector, but now back in Barnsley doing MRI scans.

Love my job but nothing left in the tank to give above what I do now.

Started in retail as a junior which meant dinner fetching dogsbody. soon realised I wanted to give orders not take em so ended up as a High street store Manager through the 80's..brilliant times.
Start of 90's got headhunted for a switch to Distribution, loved it and moved on to one of the big multinational Distribution firms as a Logistics Manager ironically head of a High street household name.
Went onto Space and allocation Manager when they kindly offered some of us a full pension and payoff to go away. Took it and did 10 years as a local delivery driver until full retirement 2 years ago...which is heaven.

Up in the top back corner it was quite dark, so amorous couples used to get up to all sorts, not knowing that we were just behind the one way glass laughing at them.

Funniest thing was watching John MacDonald in action. I once saw him make a move on two young ladies at the end of the night. He was doing well until two blokes turned up who had clearly already made some headway with the young ladies. The blokes started getting a bit angry with John, who wasn’t at all intimidated. This was because he could see Paul McGugan returning from the gents and walking up behind them. As soon as the two blokes looked up at Paul, they soon scarpered!

We probably worked there around the same time. There was always some young lady asleep in the toilets with her underwear around her ankles at the end of the night - its probably a good job that mobiles weren't a thing then!

I think the worst I saw was coming out of the office at the start of the shift and some young lady was a little worse for wear and she didn't quite make the upstairs toilets before she chundered and made the mistake of putting her hands up. What appeared to be litres of projectile vomit hit her hands and bounced back down her nice dress...
