It’s doing my head in trying to remember this horse…..
He ran in m+ races about [emoji[emoji6][emoji6]] years ago and became a bit of a cult figure at the track.
A race is/was named after him

There was a prolific sprinter at Pontefract a few years ago who was a front runner must have won 9 or 10 races forgotten his name,

I think the owner was David Barker ??
Used to get nudges from his solicitor

 

There was also a stayer called Thewherlingdervish too.

 

Yes David Barker owned lots of sprinters , In 1984 saw Chaplin's Club win his 10th race of the season and around that time Lester Piggott broke the 2 year old track record on a horse called Star Video ,

What was the name of a previous Derby winner that ran at Ponte ?
I can’t recall his name but it was the Italian Derby !!!

White Muzzle was the Italian Derby winner I was thinking of

 

Cadeaux Genereux (1988) and Sheikh Albadou (1991) both won as three-year-olds at Ponte before going on to land Group 1 sprints. Cadeaux Genereux won the July Cup in 1989, ridden by Paul Eddery, while Sheikh Albadou landed the Haydock Park Sprint Cup in 1992, ridden by Bruce Raymond.

Old timers will also perhaps remember the remarkable Spindrifter, who Sir Mark Prescott trained to win 13 out of his 19 races during the 1980 Flat season, including three victories at Pontefract.

All eyes on Southwell today folks, where City Of Troy gallops in preparation for the Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar on 2nd November. Apparently they are expecting an attendance of 1,500 to watch the gallop, which will comfortably exceed that for all of Southwell's 2024 fixtures bar two. Apparently, American stalls are to be used and the track is being used to replicate the tight turns at Del Mar. I hope we get to know his galloping companions and the respective weights they are carrying, although the latter may be stretching it a bit!

 

He won at Ponte and later on that same season, won the Derby

 

And the race that he won at Ponte is now known as the High Rise Conditions Stakes, I believe!

Bill O Gorman had other prolific sprinters that liked Pontefract notably Provideo and Timeless Times dont get multiple winners today maybe penalties and not in best interests of horse to run too much when growing, Mellotie dual winner of Cambridgeshire carried top weight to victory in prep race at Pontefract, City of Troy gallop live on At The Races around 3,30pm

 

Other top horse that ran at Pontefract include Fayr Jag, Maraahel and Loch Ridge.

 

And Pipedreamer won at Ponte in June 2007 before going on to take that year's Cambridgeshire, and subsequently, two Group 2 races.

 

That uphill finish has obviously been good training
