A few innocent men were executed years ago though, unfortunately!. :(
These were Timothy John Evans (the Christie, at 10 Rillington place, murders) and Derek Bentley (the 'Let him have it!', policeman murder).

Think Evans may have been the last hanged in this country,if it wasn't it was a man with the mind of a child, them courts don't like to change there minds, loads that's locked up that shouldn't be,and even more that shouldn't have there liberty and should be locked up.

Derek Bentley was the man who had learning difficulties, last to be hanged.

Derek Bentley wasn't the last to be hanged, the last execution was a simultaneous hanging of two men convicted of the same murder... Gwynne Evans and Peter Allen, one at Liverpool, one in Manchester in August 1964.

    Rillington Place murders - Christie.

2004 Case of Timothy Evans (Merthyr Tydfil lad) referred to Criminal Case Review Commission - application refused - 'cost could not be justified' - Timothy Evans not declared Innocent.

The film about Derek Bentley, "Let him have it" is very good and well worth a watch.

Difficult to believe we live in a world where you've got to present an argument as to why killing people might not be such a hot idea.

Let him have it, and Ten Rillington place, are both good films based on these horrible events.
I remember Chris Eccleston playing the role of Bentley, and they suggested that his mam and dad and sister, all fought for the rest of their lives, to have his name 'cleared'.

Yep all opinions, but for the likes of Roy whiting, Huntley, Lee rigbys killers and the bloke in Southport recently jail is too good for them and had that been my kids am not sure I'd be against them been ended.

He was finally posthumously pardoned around 1998 I believe. Far too late for his parents to witness it unfortunately.

Just been googling to find about if Christopher Craig, the kid who pulled the trigger, is still alive, but can't find anything that confirms. He was 16 at the time in 1952 so would be about 88 now if he is still around.

I'd happily make an exception for Lee Rigby's killers. In fact, I'd happily pull the lever myself.

If we still had the death penalty at least 10 people who were later proven innocent would have been murdered by the state. The Birmingham 6 and the Guildford 4 just for starters.

Yeah I think most of us would think that.
Would it bother them though, and act as a possible deterrent ?. I don't believe the threat of the death penalty, would stop them at all.
They are very dangerous people who do that (in the case of Lee Rigby), allegedly in the name of their 'leader', without any care or remorse etc!.
Are there many cases though these days, where it's a 100% definite open and shut case.. of Guilty! ?.

I can't remember much else about the story, so how did Derek even end up in that awful situation, with somebody like Craig ?. Which I think obviously went against his parents wishes.
Apparently the copper said give me the gun or hand it over, and Derek without realising it, said let him have it.
And that disgustingly, was looked at as Derek telling him to commit murder.
