Car just failed its MOT on a stone chip in the windscreen. No problem I thought, next day replacement at home. Except it isn't any more. After any windscreen replacement the adaptive cruise control camera needs recalibrating. Next available slot at the Autoglass service centre - Friday next week. So until them I'm on my bike. Wouldn't be a problem if I wasn't supposed to be working in Bristol on Tuesday.

Are you tied to Autoglass mate? Or can you use anyone?

If I want to make an insurance claim it has to be Autoglass. My excess is £100, so anything under £200 and I'd probably be tempted to get it sorted myself. Any suggestions?

    Can’t you get it repaired?
    Who MOT’d it?

It's a bit of an awkward chip so I think it's best off being replaced. Halfords on Carholme Rd MOT'd it. Have been going there for years and the manager absolutely sound.

I had a chip on windscreen. After supposed repair via insurance, (not sure if it wasn't free of any excess) I was told it would be ok. Took it for MOT. Failed as it was outside the limit sizewise. Company that did repair then fitted a brand new windscreen.
    To the op.
It does not affect your no claims etc. And is not reportable when renewing. Unlike an accident.

Yes mate, but I have to use Autoglass and they've got a week wait in Lincoln. Honestly, not a massive deal. The meeting in Bristol looks pretty dull so I'd probably rather dial in, and I'm happy cycling everywhere else. Gives me a good excuse not to be used as a taxi by the rest of the family!

To add insult to injury, it is forecast to rain next week.

Wouldn’t trust Halfords as far as you can throw them TBH, they are known as Halfrauds for a reason.
Not saying they are wrong in this instance just not somewhere I would touch.

In a fortnight, but the windscreen fault is deemed "major" so apparently the car is now legally undrivable. No, I didn't know this either. If I had, I'd have booked it in for its MOT on the last possible day.

TBF they have no reason to fib in this instance as they don't do glass repairs. Interestingly they found some "cracks" on my tyres, that I can't for the life of me locate. Tyres that they fitted a year ago!

Could you not get it replaced at home and not use the adaptive cruise control then take it in after to get it recalibrated?

Nightmare, haven't a clue what the adaptive camera is, my cars not that posh!

In defence of Halfords, my daughter over ran her MOT so had to use them.Failed her MOT because she needed a diagnostic test ( light kept coming on) and a wiper replacing and they only charged her for the test and threw the wiper in for free. That was the one near Stairfoot .

Well I had a very pleasant surprise on Monday when we took ours to garage.

MOT, service and oil change. There was a front dipped headlight bulb that needed changing and that was it. Still thought it'd be near enough £400, but no £264 all in. Was well chuffed.

First, and definitely not last, time we've used this garage.
