M1 currently closed near Mansfield. Not expected to reopen until after 1pm.

Might be worth looking at alternative route to get onto A38 - maybe via A61 to Alfreton

As a Burton local and frequent traveller to Barnsley, I would recommend the following route.

Stocksbridge, Bolsterstone, Strines, Bamford, Tideswell, Taddington, Moneyash, Fenny Bentley, Ashbourne, Burton. Might sound a bit convoluted but the roads are generally quiet and you can more or less guarantee a 2 hour journey. Often used to drive this way on friday nights back in the 1990s when the M1 was a car park...

Edit, also a pretty and scenic route

Looks a good route. Friends of mine are trying to get to Derby to play football. They set off at 11 using A61/ A38 and are still not there.

Used to work down at Jct 22 and can confirm this is a great alternative.

Bit late but the Derbyshire wayfarer is also a good alternative. Sheffield and Burton are included £15 or £7.50 for old gits like me.

It was a bit of a bugger. I don’t know where my sat nav took us, but we ended up on a single track road at one point

We got to Burton at about 2.45 though so about 45 minutes late.
