First: Gas Meter reader (analogue) when I was at 6th Form College.

First 'proper' job: Junior Production Planner at BP Darton (formerly BXL), planning film extrusion and Flexographic print. That got me into the packaging industry, which ultimately led to my current job.

Current: Co-founder and Managing Director of a global packaging design and production agency, with over 100 people on the team now.

This thread has been brilliant. No arguing or confrontation, just a good insight into what other BBSers have done with their working lives.

First job: IT Support Apprentice at College
Current job: Regional Service Desk Manager at a company providing IT for schools.

Inbetween that, Production Engineer, Service Desk Engineer, IT Technician. Senior IT Technician and Service Desk Team Leader.

Honestly, best move I made coming out of College for an apprenticeship, made a career from it and being in management at 27 I've already smashed my own personal goals.

First job: glass collector at Issac’s (Draycotts) then ended up bar working at KGV

Was at college and doing an apprenticeship in gas fitting, left the firm I was with after a few year to go sub contracting on site with 2 guys I worked with who then left themselves and thought me and another lad who was on site would follow, we actually decided against it and teamed up……both probably not ready to run sites dug in and chest out stuck with it and pretty much run the plumbing and gas side for a number of years and did some lovely apartments in Sheffield for a family called the Bouldings…….you may remember there son who played for us. There company in the end come too big and we were sadly forced out to big Ltd companies so had a few year doing various council schemes and other site work.

We trained as domestic every assessors in 2012 of the launch of ECO to which were still involved in now, in that time we’ve had a insulation company which operated all over the country which we parted with in 2021 and teams of gas engineers carrying out government granted work.

Current job: still working for myself with the lad who I met some 21 years ago doing Retrofit surveys for ECO projects and I kept my gas safe accreditation running so carry out some plumbing and gas work.

ive had an interesting career at times, we’ve had some crazy ideas (once thought about buying a jacket spud van) but always got on with stuff really.

Jobs often through curve balls up, it’s how you deal with them that defines you

My first job was working at the British Coal Road Transport Department at Barnsley Main in 1980 as a clerk. The dying days of British Coal and a totally different work ethic to most of the rest of my jobs. Out of sight out of mind, the older guys would sit and read the paper for half an hour mid morning with a coffee, same in the afternoon. No real supervision. A doddle of a job. After that a succession of jobs in admin and finance before finally getting fed up of sitting on my backside day in day out and becoming a postie in rural Cheshire in 2008. Great job in many ways but ultimately would destroy your knees and hips so I got out while they were still intact and retired to Kerry in 2017. I managed an Airbnb in Dingle part time for three years but am now fully engaged looking after the house and garden at home and making the most of every day in this wonderful place I was lucky enough to end up in.

My first summer job was after GCSEs in the summer of the France 98 world cup, making hosepipes at Wath Rubber. Blew my entire wage on an England tracksuit and a gold chain. A terrible life choice.

The next couple of summers after that were at Stelrad making radiators and latterly as a bar man at The Marquis at Upper Haugh.

First proper job after uni was in 2003 as a project assistant on a major housing regeneration scheme in Leeds.

This led to project managing new affordable housing schemes for a housing association before I moved to local government, where I've had a number of head of regeneration and Economic development roles, and latterly an assistant director posotion.

And now I'm about to start as the Director of Economy at a major Mayoral Combined Authority.
