Pubs - or lack of them

Hey Tarntyke, I’m spotting a bit of theme here. You seem to visit a pub only for it to close down.
Maybe if you stayed in and watched Eastenders the drinking establishments would more abundant.

 

I also think the canned beer technology the nitro widget stuff mean you can get a decent drink at home. In the 70s and 80s it was like fizzy dish water only the way to get decent pint was to go to the pub ,plus only been 3 or 4 tv channels obviously no Internet people went to pubs to be entertainment and to socialise.

 

I think you're including the Working Men's clubs like the Coronation and the Ship.

 

Tesco, Asda and Morrisons are still going strong though.

 

Great Houghton used to have 5 pubs/clubs at one time, now only one.

 

I still go in, mainly Sunday nights to meet up with my old mates. Still run by the same family since 1976. We’ll mainly by Kev, as his mam Beryl passed away a 2 or 3 years ago.

 

Aye, lol. Perhaps, If It work with football grounds. I would immediately stop going to Oakwell of course and firstly become a massive, then onto Bramall lane, then Elland road.

 

When I turned 18 in 2005 there were five on my short walk from Darfield to Wombwell, The Sportsman, The Drop, Wat Tyler, Miner's Arms, and The Station, and only The Sportsman is left. I don't think my generation (and certainly Gen Z) really see the pub as something to do every week, there are better options for entertainment nowadays.

I was in Leeds on Saturday for a gig and I can tell you every bar and pub was absolutely rammed. It was maaaad. Mainly younger people - they do go out, just not to the local.

 

Mapplewell still does well. 3 pubs, 3 micro bars and a working men's club.

 

I can count at least 13 pubs that have closed in Abingdon over the last 50 years with 2 opening or reopening. At £5 a pint drinking regularly is an expensive business. Supermarkets have cornered the market.

 

Goldthorpe Hotel and Halfway House, too.
