I remember watching him in the 74 World Cup ....... I remember tiny bits of 1970 but I watched every match (it seemed) in 74 and I swear every goal was scored from 40 yards.

    RIP

The Netherlands 74 were for my money the best team never to win the world cup

People go on about Brazil 82 but the side of Cruyff, Neeskens, Haan, Krol.... was more complete in my opinion

Brazil had an unbeliveable midfield but weaknesses elsewhere.

They badly missed Cruyff in 78 but came so close again

Really sad news. Fantastic player from a great Dutch international side which really did deserve to win the World Cup. Sadly it never happened.

They were cheated out of it in 78, but yes, still very good.
74 it was like football from another planet.

We had a local player(Comrades W. M. C.) that we used to call Neeskens coz he looked like him, that is where the similarities we'll and truly ended.

    Rip Mr Neeskens.

Excellent player, in an excellent side. 1978 is the first world cup I remember, the Dutch were a a great team, Neeskens wearing 13 IIRC. The final is forever etched in my childhood memories, all the colour and ticker tape.

    RIP.

I was actually thinking about this over the past couple of days, before I saw the news about Neeskens, but almost all the players that were accepted as being the greatest living players throughout my formative years and early teens have now died. The players from the 60s, 70s and early 80s. I’m thinking of people a level above Neeskens here - Best, Pele, Maradona, Eusebio, Beckenbauer, Charlton, Muller, Moore and Cruyff. I guess the two still with us from that very top tier are Platini and Zico.
