The club issued the following 21 word statement: "Barnsley Football Club confirms that it has separated from Daniel Stendel with immediate effect. Adam Murray has been appointed caretaker manager."
Brilliant bloke & Head Coach. I believe anything said about him by the club's hierarchy at the time (who had thrown him under the bus in the Summer) as believeable as anything said by Boris Johnson & Donald Trump.
Correct decision but conducted with very little class from the club. 6 points from 11 games. Insisted on playing Radlinger in goal and thought Bähre was the best player to captain the team. His replacement got 12 points from 10 games with the same group of players.
Truly special bloke. My favourite Daniel memory will always be the open top bus journey from Oakwell to the Town Hall. I was tasked with filming him and the players as the bus made its way through town. There was about 10 crates of Budweiser on there. Daniel walked onto the bus with one under his arm and said “ey, Whitey, come..” So I ended up being stood next to him for most of that journey as we both smashed through 12 bottles each. Might sound mad, but the journey was so slow. Took about 90 minutes to get to the Town Hall. I just remember filming him getting more and more hammered. Because I was still ‘working’ and focused on that, I didn’t feel that drunk until I actually tried making my way down the stairs. Then it hit me. I’ve little recollection of the Town Hall steps stuff, but it happened as I’d clearly filmed it. When we initially walked in and went upstairs there was a huge wooden table with about 60 beers too. Think I had a few. Woke up on a sofa at the Manx the next morning with little memory of what I’m assured was a great night. Opened my phone and alongside a text from the missus asking “good night then?” was one from Daniel saying “you reds”. Great fella. Successful coach. Loved a beer. What’s not to like?
It was very naive of him to think we could play the same way in the division above but after a promotion under his watch he was given 11 league games before the got the boot. We also lost our starting centre back pairing and our first choice keeper so that was always going to go wrong.
Done nothing since. Gave us one excellent season that he hasn't come close to achieving since at a number of clubs.
To have the fans throw him a farewell party after he was sacked kinda tells you all you need to know about how popular he was .He definitely gave us some great memories.
Absolutely fking brilliant story , cos I love him, ,only met him once when he was watching the under 18s. Amazing Coach and as good as football I've seen since the Norman Hunter days ,which says a lot.
Poor man's Jurgen Klopp. And I mean that as a compliment. He got the club and the fans. Match made in heaven for that season. Very likeable man.
Defenders do tend to play better after a few months playing together than they do when they're inexperienced and barely even speak the same language as each other. Stendel lost both his centre backs and his goalkeeper
