Barnsley FC Women produced a dominating performance to secure the first win of their FA Women’s National League campaign, as goals from Melissa Turton-Burrell, Emily Pierrepont and Freya Walton secured a 3-0 win over Stockport County at Oakwell.

The Reds started brightly, displaying a confident high press which put the visitors under pressure from the offset. After 11 minutes, Barnsley had their first chance of the game, when wing-back Alayna Millard hit a powerful shot from distance which was collected by the Stockport goalkeeper.

The visitors were not without their own chances, however, with the midfielder, Hamer hitting a speculative shot just outside the area after 18 minutes, which was directed well over the crossbar.

Barnsley took the lead after 28 minutes, with the winger Pierrepont receiving the ball just beyond the halfway line and hitting an outstanding through ball into the path of Turton-Burrell. The defender mazed into the area before hitting home just inside the eighteen-yard box with a powerful shot which comfortably beat Stockport ‘keeper Lucy Farrell, for the opener.

The Reds continued to look good value for their lead following the opener, coming close to doubling their advantage twice as half time approached. First, Pierrepont was able to produce a stunning run down the left flank after 42 minutes, but her follow-up cross was unable to reach the path of any incoming forward.

Two minutes later, Barnsley skipper Charley Evans reached the ball from 25 yards out, hitting a curling effort which looped just past the post, ensuring the Reds went into the break one goal up.

HALF TIME: Barnsley FC Women 1-0 Stockport County Ladies FC

Barnsley FC Women had their first chance of the half eleven minutes after the restart, with Betty Cheetham coming in from the right with a powerful run, beating two defenders on her way into the area. Stockport ‘keeper Farrell had to think quickly, producing a goalmouth clearance to prevent Cheetham from dispatching an effort goalwards.

This positive start to the second 45 buoyed Jess Horsley’s side, and they produced a second goal in the 68th minute. Midfielder Walton picked up the ball in space in the middle of the park, and drove towards the area, before hitting a spectacular looping effort from 25 yards out which meandered over the Stockport ‘keeper into the back of the net, to double the Reds’ advantage.

Stockport attempted to rally back from this setback, and thought they had pulled one back in the 73rd minute, when the midfielder Lancaster was able to head past Flaherty from a corner kick, but the official’s flag was raised to signal an offside.

The Reds continued to dominate in possession in the latter stages of the game, and this paid dividends in the 76th minute, when they won a free kick on the left flank from 35 yards out. Pierrepont stepped up, and hit a powerful free-kick effort which comfortably beat Farrell in the Stockport net, for Barnsley’s third goal of the afternoon.

Barnsley FC Women were then able to see out their lead in the remaining minutes, to secure a comfortable first win in the FA Women’s National League.
