There is a Facebook group of the same name. I’m a follower of it and there are new pictures posted most days. It’s very interesting stuff
Watching them reminded me that despite it being renovated and put back in place the clock on the old Benji Harrold jewellers tells the wrong time. I remember foundly checking the time on it everyday on the way to school as i walked through town,
It’s easy to look back at the grand old buildings and infrastructure and wonder why they were allowed to be demolished, dismantled, filled in etc., but in reality they were left to ruin and the funds to bring them back to their former glory just weren’t available at the time. The 60’s and 70’s have a lot to answer for.
The same's still happening. Absent landlords happy to take the rent but reluctant to spend owt on upkeep / appearance - especially above street level; unless the council's paying for it of course.
That's not really the case...or at least only partially, after WW2 there was a brave new world mentality for some, making the Architect and developer kings...Council's were awash with money ( compared to today) and innovative concrete builds were seen as a symbol of a new progressive age....People wanting to protect old buildings were often ridiculed....add onto that a culture of brown envelopes from developers to Council leaders and it was unstoppable.
