[BFC SITE] Played for Both | Barnsley v Blackpool

Ahead of Saturday’s trip to Bloomfield Road, we take a look at some of the players who have graced the books of both Barnsley and Blackpool over the years.

Martin Bullock

Bullock was an instrumental figure in the side which won promotion to the Premier League under Danny Wilson in 1997, featuring 185 times in an eight-year spell with the Reds which also saw the Reds’ first trip to Wembley in the 2000 playoff final, as well as earning international honours with England U21. Following this legendary stint at Oakwell, Bullock swapped Barnsley for Blackpool, featuring over 150 times for the Tangerines in a four-year spell which was capped by a golden goal winner in their 2002 Football League Trophy victory over Huddersfield Town.

Adam Hammill

Hammill needs no introduction to Barnsley fans, as someone who lit up Oakwell across two spells in nine years, notably scoring pivotal goals in both of the Reds’ Wembley victories under Paul Heckingbottom in the 2015-16 campaign. But although he may be better known for his two spells with the Reds between 2009 and 2011, and 2015 and 2018, the Liverpool-born goalscoring winger briefly spent time on loan at Bloomfield Road in the first half of the 2008-09 season, playing 25 times for Blackpool prior to his move to Oakwell in February, scoring his first senior goal in English football for the Tangerines in November 2008.

Kenny Dougall

The Australian midfielder was a big part of Daniel Stendel’s side in the 2018-19 campaign following his arrival from Dutch side Sparta Rotterdam, featuring 29 times in all competitions as the Reds won promotion from League One. Injury limited Dougall to 12 appearances in his second season at Oakwell, before he made a move to Blackpool in the summer of 2020. In four years with the Tangerines, Dougall featured 129 times across two divisions, most notably scoring both goals for the Bloomfield Road outfit in their 2021 League One play-off final victory over Lincoln City, before making a move to Thai side Buriram United this summer.

Rob Edwards

Edwards may be known more by modern fans for his exploits in management with Forest Green Rovers and Luton Town, but during his playing days, the Welshman was a tough-tackling centre-half who closed his fourteen years in professional football with a two-year spell at Oakwell under the management of Keith Hill and David Flitcroft. The defender arrived at Barnsley following a three-year stint at Bloomfield Road, during which time he featured for Blackpool as part of their Premier League squad under Ian Holloway in 2010-11.

Arthur Kaye

This one may be something of a blast from the past for some of our older Reds’ fans. Local lad Kaye was something of a star attraction at Oakwell throughout the 1950s, scoring 54 goals in over 250 games for the Reds between 1950 and 1959, most notably helping to steer Barnsley to the Third Division North championship in the 1954-55 season. The winger then made something of a marquee move to Blackpool in the summer of 1959, featuring 48 times in two seasons and scoring nine times as the Lancashire-based side finished in mid-table in successive seasons in the top flight of English football.

Ashley Fletcher

Current Blackpool player Fletcher is no stranger to the heady heights of the third tier, as he previously made a star turn for the Reds in their successful League One playoff-winning campaign under Paul Heckingbottom in 2015-16. Then on loan from Manchester United, the forward scored nine times in all competitions, most notably netting in the Reds’ Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final victory over Oxford, as well as producing the opener in their League One playoff final victory against Millwall. Fletcher arrived at Bloomfield Road this summer, after a three-year spell at Championship side Watford, and has so far scored one goal in eight league games for the Tangerines.
