I love Hourihane. But if he’s not going to play, his salary needs to be the bottom rung of a completely inexperienced coach and paid much less than Devaney and Stead. Anything more is another example of our largesse.
I'd not actually seen that article so thanks for that. I still think we're missing a trick with him. He played 41 times for derby last season in an automatic promotion winning team. I genuinely thought he'd have been a strong contender for the captain's armband.
Two things. First of all its good that the owners are putting money in to keep the club solvent. Its a no-brainer, an obvious plus that that's happening. Second, its also clear (to me anyway) that decision-making at the club has been very poor, especially, but not exclusively, with regard to recruitment, to such an extent that the overall quality of the players on the pitch has deteriorated over time but also, at the same time, the squad has being enlarged illogically so that there are simply too many players at the club who simply dont fit a role. This glaring error in recruitment is one of the main contributing factors to the owners' need to pump in the money to keep us afloat (point one). So, unless the owners think much more carefully about recruiting better and making sure, with the coach's guidance, that specific players are brought in for clear roles the need to pump in larger than needed sums will continue. The board is helping the club, which is good, but it's having to help too much because of its own incompetent approach. Either there are lessons being learned or the board is willing to carry on losing bigger sums than it should each year. Alternatively the board will need to look at selling up and advertising the club for sale if the main investors get fed up. There is another alternative but it will pretty much mean the total collapse of the club and given the recent links with the council I dont think that's on the agenda just now. Neerav et al need to be more canny and focused basically.
There's a very simple reason the owners of Barnsley Football club have had to put £8 million into the club to balance the budget. They have and continue to make bad decisions and allow others to make bad decisions on their behalf. The problem is although it's very nice of them to keep pumping money into the club they show no sign learning from their many many mistakes which means eventually it will come to the point that the money supply gets turned off. I could understand people supporting the board if the club was on an upward trajectory but it's not, no one can honestly say the squad is stronger now than it was when the current board took control and it gets weaker with every window.

Good post. I think there is still a hangover of the mind set based on the snake oil sold to them by Conway of making money by developing players for sale rather than success on the pitch. Hence signing lots of players perceived as good development prospects rather than what the team actually needs, hence we have one young lad at left back and loads of midfielders. Whilst acknowledging we have the goalie and Craig, it also means we probably don't make the same use of loans as our rivals.
Assuming we don’t get promoted, it sounds like there’ll be a few players sold this summer - Connell, Phillips, MDG, Earl, Jalo, Watters, Cosgrove, Cotter, O’Keefe. If they go to Championship clubs that may cover the losses. And then we start again.
Of what I can find mate. Of the 40 named on the website. At least 15 are part of the academy teams given professional contracts. Are groundmen part of the footballing side. Like I say it names 31 on the staff side of football. As for acadamy status. scholarships number 11 and the named pro's x11 are included in both 1st team and academy set ups. But still equates to only 51players in total. I'm guessing some coaches are part time and coach boys teams to be included in the official figure. Re the mens teams. Precious few on your list will be moving up a division next season. More than half of them can't nail down a guaranteed first team place.
The signing players for development wouldn't be so bad if any of the current crop showed any signs of developing in the right way sadly none have improved and several have gone backwards. I can't think of one player in our squad who a Championship club would be willing to pay good money for so where does that leave the balance sheet.
Himself......he'd been involved in other clubs and I think he got lucky with ocg nice but had realised the dream was something he could sell to others while enriching himself. I can't help but equate him with Xero mostells character in the producers. Looking at other clubs he's been involved with, he cared not one jot about those clubs. Our owners eventually woke up to him but I'm not sure they've quite realised the whole model is not sustainable, not every penistone church signing will be a John stones.even if you can do it every other season, it still isn't sustainable.
I actually think we've missed a massive trick not playing Hourihane all the way through the Bristol Street motors competition, would have been a perfect situation for conor to put some of his coaching into use, whilst mentoring some of the young lads in a competitive game and would have also kept him ticking over fitness wise.
