[BFC SITE] Reds exit Bristol Street Motors Trophy with defeat at Oakwell

Barnsley FC exited the Bristol Street Motors Trophy with a 3-1 defeat against Doncaster Rovers at Oakwell, in a spirited performance by a young Reds’ side.

The Reds had their first chance of the game five minutes in, when Kyran Lofthouse played a ball don the left flank to Vimal Yoganathan, but the midfielder was unable to control the pass, with the ball going out for a Rovers’ goal kick.

The visitors found themselves on the attack in the 8th minute, when Sbarra produced a shot after cutting inside and hitting a shot from distance which was cleared off the line by Bayley McCann. After 22 minutes, Doncaster were denied when Kieren Flavell, making his professional debut, produced a diving save to thwart the forward Ironside in the eighteen yard box.

Five minutes later, Barry Cotter almost gave the Reds the lead, but his header was intercepted by Emmanuel at the far post. Bayley McCann put the ball back into the box, but the cross was unable to connect with any incoming Reds forward.

In the 36th minute, Darrell Clarke’s men came close when Yoganathan played Aiden Marsh through with an outstanding pass, however, the forward saw his effort saved by Ian Lawlor in the Doncaster net. Kelechi Nwakali received the ball from distance, with the Barnsley number 50 hitting a speculative effort over the bar.

Lofthouse produced another mazing run from the left flank, attempting to square into the area. However, the resultant pass by the wing-back was cut out by the Doncaster defence.

The visitors took the lead on the brink of half time, with Ironside heading in a leftwards cross past Flavell, ensuring that Darrell Clarke’s men went into half time chasing a one goal deficit.

Nine minutes after the restart, Fabio Jalo produced a bursting run down the right flank, before being dispossessed by the defender Fleming before he was able to get a shot in. The young forward found himself in the box in the 59th minute, curling his shot wide of the far post.

Doncaster doubled their lead in the 73rd minute after a cross from the left-hand side found Harry Clifton who slotted the ball into the net from the edge of the box.

Three minutes later, Kyran Lofthouse made a great run down the left wing into the box, but his cross was blocked, and Barnsley had a corner. Nwakali delivered a cross from the subsequent set piece, which was met by Marsh who headed it past the Rovers’ keeper, making the score 2-1.

The visitors doubled their lead again in the 84th minute, with Kyle Hurst bringing the ball down in the box and directing it past Flavell at close range.

Darrell Clarke’s men were unable to find a response to this third goal, and as such exited the Bristol Street Motors Trophy with a home defeat

Proof reading!! As in why can’t they do some? Also congratulations on writing a report that makes it sound like an even game. Clearly it was nothing of the kind

 

To be pedantic, we'd already exited!

 

To be honest we were virtually out after the first game, after gifting ManUre's kids team the 2-3 win.
Its not much consolation, but Doncaster go through, and put Duff's Huddersfield out as well.

 

'Barnsley competed for over 90 minutes against a determined Doncaster side. Fielding a side containing many up-and-coming young players and academy starlets the Reds went toe-to-toe with a Doncaster team which had many experienced players in the ranks. There was a lot of energy and skill shown by the relatively inexperienced reds and there were a lot of positives to take from the game'
I think mine's just as good and I didn't even go.

 

Yes another poor bit of reporting but I didn't like to pick on everything. It's so dispiriting though that a professional business cannot employ people in that task and have them do it properly. It's week after week and nothing is ever done about improving matters.
