I reckon this national insurance hike is going to cause wage stagnation and redundancies. I don’t envisage much growth in the next few years, which is what is needed

The NHS is the perfect example of this. As a country, the percentage of our GDP that we spend on health care is broadly in line with other comparable countries. It's a fallacy that its vastly under funded. But our outcomes are immeasurably worse. That's not just funding, that's a problem with the system. We treat the NHS like a national religion and to suggest that it's not the best model in the world is like committing blasphemy but it's a model that no-one else has copied. I don't have the answers as to what the solution is, and we definitely don't want the US model, but something needs to change.
On top of the fact that interest rates will stay higher for longer, impacting everyone with a mortgage, and the cost of borrowing will go up for the govt, both likely outcomes already acknowledged by Reeves.
Me too - not the first clue how to deal with megaliths like the NHS. But neither do politicians with no experience whatsoever of running anything ever before. Some things should be beyond politics. Some things - like the NHS - should be run by properly trained and focused and dedicated well paid experienced professionals who get rewarded for success and dismissed for failure. And that approach should filter down all the way to the wards.
Just to add to that , the money going into the NHS isn’t going to Gp surgeries. In fact, they have a bigger wage bill to deal with, so expect cuts and an even poorer service.

Said for a long time the NHS as is today is not fit for purpose, it needs ripping up and starting again but no party will ever do this as it would make them unelectable for a generation. Like others I dont have the answers to how etc but totally agree the NHS should not be a political play thing and should be above Politics. I’ve always felt the way forward is to have some sort of group/committee that outlines the long term NHS plans made up of multiparty members and any Party coming into power agree to honour those plans.
