I think the way TV messed around with fixtures instead of the traditional Sat afternoon fragmented the competition. The same is happening with the league.
It's a massive shame, a great competition ruined by greed. As soon as Alex Ferguson and the FA agreed that Man utd could pull out of the Fa cup in 1999 to favour the world club championship and a chance at hosting the world cup in England the competition was severely devalued.
The magic of football, certainly at professional level has gone. It's all money, money, money. So much so that many, if not all outside the premier league are hemorrhaging the stuff in the chase to get rich. Fans.....they aren't important. Tradition.....that's not important. One premier league players salary could have saved Bury. The amounts that caused Wigan and Derby to go into admin (yes their own fault) is pittance to what is swilling around the premier league. The whole thing is fcked. Non league for me now. Rec is just around the corner and role on February when I can start watching the NPL's again!
im talking more broadly about it as a competition. I would be proud and happy if we beat Scunthorpe over 90s.
It’s lost something but not totally gone. Still have great memories of our run to the Semi final not so long ago. If we get a decent draw I may well go to the next round. Let’s see though.
I’d rather see us win the FA Cup than get back to the Premier League. Always dreamed of us getting to the Cup Final as a kid. But that was when the Cup Final took over 2 of the 3 TV channels from early morning. Twice I’ve thought it was going to happen. We’ve got to the Quarter-Finals 5 (I think) times since I started going to Oakwell, but usually I expected us to lose. In 98, however, I thought we were going to make it. But Alan Shearer old manned Adie Moses and that dream ended. But then 10 years later I thought we were going to win it, as many Reds fans did. We totally let ourselves down in the Semi. I’ve only watched Odejayi’s miss once since the game, many years later, and it was worse than I remembered. I was so, so disappointed that day. We’ll never have a better chance than that, in my lifetime.
