Remembrance

How on earth did they manage to muck up the remembrance tribute pre game today? Supposed to be a reading followed by playing of last post and then a minute’s silence on the ref’s whistle. Shouldn’t be too difficult to follow that but then the ref goes and blows his whiste, the last post is played and that’s it. Unbelievable. Obviously tried to put it right then with the minute’s silence before the KO but crikey, what a balls up.

 

The fans messed up big time. The announcer stated the silence starts on the refs whistle. He blew the whistle and people started cheering. A simple instruction to follow the fans didn't.

He blew the whistle to start the minute silence, which is what the announcer said was the plan.

 

Yes but he was supposed to blow it after the reading and playing of the last post, not at the beginning. 100% refs fault.

 

The plan was to read the poem, play the Last Post and then blow the whistle for the minutes silence.

Ref blew his whistle immediately, the Last Post started and then the poem followed. And then the silence had to be tagged back on.

It was a bit of a farce.

 

And then the British Legion lads bizarrely kept marching through the silence with their squeaky shoes.

 

The poem should have been read when the wreaths were laid but that happened when the sponsors were still taking photos with no announcement what was happening. At Shrewsbury it was far better organised even if the bugler obviously had a cold soar on his lips

 

Let's not forget hearing the announcer getting a bollocking in the background and then hearing him breathing and rustling because his mic wasn't turned off through the minutes silence.

I did enjoy the boys marching round in silence, though, when usually they'd be greeted with applause.

 

That was my third in 3 games. Had one at Shrewsbury and at Port Vale as well.

 

Definitely the referee who didn’t listen. Poem last post whistle silence but it went

whistle last post then he whistled again and Instructed the players to switch ends.

When entering the ground and you can hear the last post been played wouldn't you stop talking to you mate and be quiet? Some were making alot of noise entering. Probably the same people who moan about who's not wearing a poppy.

 

Prior, Planning, an Preperation, Prevents a Pi55 Poor Performance, the only mistake last night was not following the plan, everything was covered an the day ended well.

 

Bet ours was the most shambolic?!!

 

It was a complete **** up the announcement was vague

 

Pretty much everyone involved messed up in some way:

- Ref blew too soon initially.
- The bugler started playing immediately after ref’s first whistle when he wasn’t supposed to play until after the reading which hadn’t happened at that point.
- Announcer left microphone on throughout.
- Fans cheered when ref blew second time to start the silence even though we obviously hadn’t had the silence yet as the Last Post had been playing.
- Players all ran off even though silence hadn’t happened (I guess they thought it wasn’t going to after everyone cheered).

Absolute farce.

Some positives though:

- The Last Post was played beautifully.
- They did swallow their pride and made sure the silence was done even though it was probably embarrassing to reannounce it.

 

The problem is that while the itinerary published by the club was 7:10 reading of for the fallen. 7:12 last post and then minutes silence.

In reality the stadium announcement said
"We would first first like to introduce the president of the British legion Barnsley division who will read the poem for the fallen. That will be preceded by the last post and then a minutes silence which will begin on the referee's whistle."

So the itinerary said last post, silence, poem but the announcement said poem, last post, silence. That means the bugler did exactly as the published itinerary said to do but was at odds with the stadium announcement. Which does he go with? What he's been told or what he's just heard? Then there was the added confusion that they said it would start on the referee's whistle which might sound clear but is a bit ambiguous really because of how they lumped the post and silence into one sentence in the announcement. Was it meant to be interpreted as "the last post and minutes silence which will start on the referee's whistle"? Or was it "the last post. And a minutes silence which will start on the referee's whistle"?

Either way the order seems a bit daft to me. It's only natural that people will cheer at the end of the last post as it's applauding the bugler and sentiment. It's also obvious that people cheer at the end of a minutes silence so the announcement to have a poem read out after it was just daft.
For me it should be the poem and the poem ending naturally signals the start of the minutes silence (fans would be silent from the start of the poem anyway and then the full minute at the end of it) and as soon as the minute ends the bugler starts playing. That seems to be a natural order of things for me.

In fact I believe the natural order is for the wreaths to be laids during the reading of the poem, then straight into silence and end with last post. The laying of the wreaths was a bit piss poor, just done while nobody was paying attendance with sponsors hanging around

 

Agree the Last Post was spot on. Unlike some of those played last week at other grounds!
