Delighted for him. I was welling up watching the celebrations after. I thought it was never going to happen after he crashed out last year.

    A day early, the b*stard.

Only kidding, looking forward to cheering him into Dijon tomorrow without having to worry about whether he'll do it or not. What an achievement. I'm a bit emotional.

    Wow.

Didn’t think he still had it in him but massive respect. He was already a great but he’s immortal now.

I too thought his time was up, but this win raises the possibility of adding a couple more.

Bit weird cycling innit? If a British marathon runner kept running marathons and never got near winning owt, but often ran the first hundred yards the quickest, would they get the same love?

Or there was a running event with 21 marathons and a Brit won 35 of them during his career

Hmm isn't it more like a formula 1 driver never winning a championship but getting a lot of love for winning an individual race?
Each stage of the tour de France is an F1 race, the tour itself is the season championship.

It is if some of the Grand Prix are only one or two laps.

The cycling world, and all involved in it, has a smile on its face today. If ever a win was wanted by everyone 1 it was this one.

What an achievement both in terms of the record number of wins in the TDF but winning a race of this càlibre at the age of 39.

After all the trials and tribulatiins in his career he has risen to be correctly acknowledged as the greatest of all sprinters.

Just being in the race is a masive achievement in itself.

To cycle well over 100 miles and still be able to be involved in a sprint finish is unthinkable to most mortals.

The planning and tactics to deliver a team leader to a winning position in a sprint race is mind blowing.

To win one stage in the tour is often the pinacle of many fabulous riders careers.

To do this 35 times is truly beyond belief.

Why the first 100 yards? It's the last bit he does the quickest, and that results in him winning things - the stages and points classifications.

The shortest stage this year is 40 laps of the Monaco grand Prix. I doubt Lewis Hamilton would get that far without an engine
