Yeah the Nations league is only the Johnston's Paint version of Intl football, but we've won this match very comfortably tonight, 0-3. That means revenge for them beating us at Wembley, and we lead the group now with one game left. Its the 'derby' match coming up now against Rep Ireland, at Wembley this weekend.
Bet some of the players who withdrew from the squad with "injuries" are wishing they'd turned up now their replacements from the u21 squad have performed so well
Over 10,000 applied so they should have let everyone go rather than have so many empty seats. Heavy handed cops using tear gas whilst fans are crushed together outside trying to get in before it started. Two loos as well.
Played ok. Didnt wanna cross the ball at all 1st half. I thought Curtis Jones was great for a debut away from home
Its been a gamble that hasn't really worked with Carsley to be honest. But I hope for his sake that we can win our NL group, and that would mean us going back up to Intl League A level. However, if we do achieve that, then I guess that some fans will ask what more could Lee have done. And what exactly did he do wrong ?.
My first England away game at that stadium in 2001, we won 2-0, Beckham and Scholes. 10pm kick off in the summer, we spent 90 mins dodging flares being fired at us.
That match and victory in the early 00's, was mentioned on the radio 5 live commentary by the way. In fact they said that we've always won our matches away to Greece, and still have a 100% record there. Hey is that true!.
Yeah I agree with both of those facts, and I think they quite rightly cost him in the end. But like I say, if we still end up winning the group, then he'll get fans saying he did what was asked of him. And he maybe deserved better, etc!.
In 1983 there were less than 100 English there and they had firecrackers, amongst other stuff, thrown at them. They were eventually escorted round the running track to a safer spot, or out of the ground, can't recall which. A few years later in a friendly it was non stop stone slinging.
The two toilets is fake news mate. The toilet block was probably the biggest I’ve seen, had enough for a toilet each. Although you had to leave to ground to go to the damn thing. Rest of it is true though, the police were a nightmare. Shocking behaviour from them last night.
On the train going in we wondered why we had riot police at the doors with 5ft shields ...... every time we stopped at a station the doors opened automatically and they would block the open door with the shields. 5 stations down we realised why, a hail of bricks were launched through them! One struck a bloke on the head, the rest bounced off the shields.
Also, remember when we won 1-5 away to Germany, in those World cup '02 qualifiers. We then under estimated Greece at home (Old Trafford) in the final group match. Beckham hit that stoppage time free kick though, and we drew 2-2, and we won the group!. Another suprising failure to beat Greece at home though, despite always beating them away.
Hey I used to read and collect the Roy of the Rovers and Eagle comics, in the early-mid 80s (and I think they eventually merged together!).
It was like a personal quest to get something from that game for him. He was everywhere. He had plenty of sighters for that free kick goal though, so many squandered opportunities, but he got there in the end.
