I explained part of it on the Kemi Badenoch thread.....the farms are now massively overvalued...the Tories in 2019 and the current Govt are so keen to get houses built...that they've relaxed the Greenbelt rules in the UK NPPF ( National Planning Policy Framework) and farming land is now fair game to developers and speculators...pushing land per acre values up many times over since 2018....meaning they're now inflated asset rich but cash poor.
A fairer way would be to make the assessment of valuation on profits made...the Govt would only need to ask HMRC for the figures.

They seemed to do just fine before Thatcher scrapped the inheritance tax in 1985. They also voted in support of Brexit thinking it would benefit them, well that worked out well for them and the rest of us.

Farage was there too. The man who actively campaigned for something that royally fcked the majority of farmers - that plenty of them voted for.

Thick as mince the lot of them.

Edit: And Andrew Lloyd Webber is there. Another salt of the earth grafter who is fighting the good fight.

    Pass the sick bucket.

He's from Rotherham / Doncaster but I can't remember him sticking up for Miners and Steel Workers in the 80s and 90s when they were losing there industries and liveihoods but that's because he didn't as he's one of the dead witches fan boys. Clarkson is a selfish greedy ******* who like many other greedy selfish ******** don't want to pay any tax never mind their fair share but would be the first to moan if a public service they need to use isn't there anymore.

I personally love how he's slagging off the typical BBC while ignoring that the hypocrite was happy to work for them for a few decades until he was fired for assault

You missed out them polluting rivers, killing birds of prey, destroying biodiversity and natural habitat and putting natural food chains in jeopardy from the excessive use of pesticides.

And if they see a field with a pond with a family having a picnic they fill in the pond with concrete, plough the family into the field, blow up the tree and use the leaves to make a dress for their wife, who's also their brother.

Like huge subsidies and 50% less inheritance tax than the rest of us payable over 10 years?

I still find it impossible to believe the CLA analysis, even if land prices are inflated. They reckon a typical farm - 200 acres of arable, single owner (is there anything typical about this?) - would attract inheritance tax of £400000 over 10 years against an expected annual profit of £24000, approximating to 160% of annual profit.

I struggle to believe a 200 acre single owner farm is a typical example, or such a farm would be worth £3m+, yet make <25k annual profit. If there is anything at all typical about that, they couldn't afford the diesel to drive their tractors to London to protest.

I can't comment on the economics of farming, or what size is considered viable, but you mentioned a 200 acre farm...is that small or large?...I don't really know tbh, but currently the average price of agricultural land is £11,300 per acre...that makes that farm worth £2.26m before you start adding on the value of the farmhouse, outbuildings, livestock and machinery. In 2018/19 before the alterations to the NPPF average land price stood at around £6500.

Edit...according to Govt figures the average farm size is 203 Acres...however almost half of all farms are 50 Acres or less. There are 209,000 farms in the UK.

Edit 2...an article from the grauniad
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/nov/19/what-are-inheritance-tax-changes-affecting-uk-farmers#:~:text=The budget changed this: from, rather than the standard 40%.

In fairness to farmers... certainly round our way, the countryside mess of tyres and industrial waste is mostly caused by commercial flytippers...if it's on the country lane the Council pay for its removal, if it's on farmland the farmer has to pay.
