just worth pointing out his annual tax bill is more than most earn in a lifetime. The irony on this post isn’t lost on me. You say about livelihoods being ruined - what is your take on this ? This is what this is about for the next generation of farmers who will inherit the family business. They are doing to some farmers what thatcher did to the miners - what would your thoughts be if you saw a sarcastic woe is me quote from a city boy in the 80s regarding miners had the internet been about?

the black hole is mythical (allegedly) this government caving into a by and large underworked, overpaid and overstaffed public sector created a mountain of debt -a likely reason why the government blocked a freedom of information request regarding it. reeves clawed back £40bn in the budget for an alleged £22bn black hole. To say maths is a must do subject - these figures don’t stack up. Let’s be brutally honest, this government has been as bad as you’ll see for a new incumbent government-they’ve gone after everyone-apart from the public sector - they’ll be after them in 12 months.
They might turn out okay, but I’m far from convinced. There’s only so long that they can trot out ‘it’s the mess we were left’ line, before they have to take some accountability- it’s their name above the door -stand and fall by your decisions.
Don’t forget we’re supposed to be a town that ‘calls a spade a spade’ - yet Steven reed admitted lying , Dan Jarvis etc went around canvassing with no mention of removing pensioners WFA, keir starmer had allegedly said a year ago (whilst in opposition) that he couldn’t remove tuition fees because of the state of the public purse - yet here we are being led to believe it’s worse than they thought. I predicted reeves would do this before the election on this message board.

It's not hard to understand what happens if a farmer gets an inheritance bill.

    1) They can't afford it so have to sell part of their land to pay for it.

    2) They have less land which makes it harder to make a living with profit margins already squeezed.

    3) Because farmers cannot produce as much on less land, we become even more dependent on imports from abroad.

    4) This would add greatly to emissions to get stuff here when we should be looking to produce as much of the food we consume as possible.

You keep harping on about the Public Sector and Civil Service, I worked in the Civil Service for 18 years, and you couldn’t be more wrong about overstaffing, underworked, and as for overpaid, even more of a joke. You sound like you just read a book of Tory sound bites from the last 20 years. All I ever heard Tory Govts.do was harp back to a previous Labour Govt.and the mess they left. We’ve had unnecessary and grossly unfair Austerity thrust on the ordinary folk and the cost of living crisis, whilst the rich have done very nicely thank you. I was also a miner for 14 years and the sarcastic woe is me was very much alive and well during the strike and not just from ‘city boy’ either.

Comparing farmers to miners is a disgrace.

Last time I checked, Miners weren't passing on millions of pounds worth of assets to their kids and moaning if they were then taxed on this.

You've said something similar to this before - what's the relevance? Because he pays more tax we're not allowed to criticise him for trying to dodge tax or being a ****?

Farmers will still be in a better tax position than any other business owner, not that many farms will be affected and it will hit the ***** like Clarkson and Dyson who smugly bought farm properties to try and avoid tax.

Like I said ‘by and large’ , the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again. The public sector needs the fat trimming, not more money thrown at it. As for wages , if you took pension benefits and converted that to a private sector scheme it would cost £000’s of £s a year in contributions

We all have views that when analysed will fit a certain party , as I’ve said before life is full of contradictions. I would say if you took 100 people and their views on various things , there will likely be some that you agree with of parties you see as opposition

the farmers / miners thing is a debate/opinion but whether you like it or not it is the same principle- a government flexing its muscle to shut down an industry. Farmers are asset rich and cash poor , but if the generations have to strip assets to cover IHT bills then this will meet a sorry end

I’ve voted for all 3 main parties in my lifetime - I vote for who suits my views. Is it better to be open minded or to only vote a certain way irrespective of views?

this government would not get in power if there was an election today and that speaks volumes

Or maybe it says that they're trying to make difficult choices for the longer term benefit rather than doing short term populist politics?

But you’ve contradicted yourself in the first paragraph.

as for the second part , the 2 examples (and I’m sure there are more) aren’t the true reflection of farmers as a whole - what Clarkson should have said is ‘don’t go after the small man, go after such as me’ where he doesn’t rely on farming to make his living - have a 2 tier system in place!

I thought you lot don't like "Two Tier" stuff?

And if you're expecting someone like Clarkson to play the moral highground and think of someone else other than himself, then I've got some Magic Beans to sell you.

I like your theory. Don't criticise a multimillionaire who admitted to buying land to avoid paying a fortune in tax and is now lying about it and protesting the government on false pretences because someone who cut your hair MIGHT not have paid tax on the £10 trim.

I will be sure not to call Putin a genocidal maniac because I havent done a DBS check on Maureen from number 12

You completely miss the point - he pays his fair share of income tax - by buying the farm he did nothing illegal - he was protecting his wealth and investing in land as opposed to anything else. There only so far an ISA limit will go when you're worth upwards of £55m

As petty as you make it sound , the other is blatant tax avoidance which is illegal , and if this is repeated day in and day out up and down the country the cost to the public purse in this and resulting benefit claims for being a 'low income family' is huge- what that post does tell me is the direction of your moral compass on this sort of thing

Like I said, a system for the super rich and a system for the family farms wouldnt go amiss

Why does paying income tax mean he shouldn't be subject to the same inheritance rules as the rest of the population who don't look to squirrel their wealth away in farms to escape the taxman?

I never said he did anything illegal, just that it's morally contemptible and I'm glad he's not going to fully escape the tax after all.

I live in a rural area and know lots of farmers. They work hard and don’t act rich. They provide food we all need, especially in an uncertain world which is only getting more uncertain. They just want to offer a home and continuation of their way of life to their kids. I think they’ve been done dirty by the budget.
