Aged 86, was a bit of a Marmite politician by left and right politics, but nonetheless a dedicated politician. Blair’s ’Olive branch’ to the left when he was appointed deputy PM? Been a lot worse MPs serving than him.
And he gave someone who smashed an egg on his head a punch in the face. While I'm not a big supporter of punches in the face, that was one of the few occasions when it was warranted.
I appreciate the term 'Marmite' but all politicians are that to some degree, JP was an old fashioned, combative character and being deputy leader was his niche, he wasn't leadership material because of his style, but I as a working man I regarded him as a politician that was in my corner. Politics is a sea of monsters and every party needs a shark, JP was labour's shark. RIP Fella.
Sad to hear. A well liked labour politician. Left wing activist. And as Jay said. Nice punch. When Blair found out he asked him what went off.? His reply He said 'I was just carrying out your orders. You told us to connect with the electorate, so I did'." RIP sir.
Had a stroke in 2019 he never recovered from. I enjoyed his channel 5 show he did going around factories such as Soreen.
I'm not a fan of many politicians on either side, but we could do with a few more John Prescott's now.
Wa Was a decent jab. I wasn't a big Prescott fan but as Jay says above, that was a deserved punch, well delivered
