Me and my little mate went in town tonight……all I can say is that is was absolutely fantastic!! I was a little sceptical with them not having a Christmas light countdown switch on but that was great, every 15 minutes they played a Christmas story on the side of Cineworld wall with a choir singing (every 30 minutes) the story was great and showed many old places of the town centre of years gone by……… That glassworks square is absolutely unbelievable, full of life colour atmosphere and passion……..and it’s all ours!!! Folk who knock it need there heads testing, the council and planners did a remarkable job!! Get yourselves in tomorrow and treat yourself
My daughter went and had been to several sites. Said it was brilliant. Got to say Barnsley gets a bad press even from its own. As someone who lives outside of town, I look on with pride. No other town locally comes close.
Whilst I may seem biased, i genuinely can’t think nor another town as good as ours!! I spoke to a lady today who said her husbands best friend comes over from Manchester every few month and they can’t wait to go in town drinking cos it’s so good. How do I upload photos and videos on here?
o I honestly think Barnsley is a town on the up. House prices are so low compared to surrounding areas. I’d be buying in Barnsley.
45,000 people there last year. The Xmas market this year is also bigger and now with the teepee, what a town - no wonder it's one of Yorkshire's biggest growing towns.
The lady I was talking to was from the north east, they lived in Sheffield but there landlord was selling up so they moved to Barnsley, I asked if she’ll stop in Barnsley now and she said ‘if you’ll have us’ The place has it all
That tipi looks brilliant……as you enter that square from the bottom of the Arcade it looks the business
Totally agree - I moved away in the early 90's but am genuinely blown away by its transformation over the last few years. There's a vibrant feel about it and all these events that take place are bringing visitors in. It's why other local towns and City's are looking at Barnsley as the way to move forward
I went to Rotherham Monday for an hospital appointment, went on the train by god it’s grim as owt! It makes Barnsley look like St Tropez and the town centre wow
Disappointed I didn't go now but last year's was such a farce from an organisational point of view that I gave it a miss this year. Wish I hadn't. We have one of the best town centres in the north of England. Can't wait for the next developments to it
What are they? I hope pulling down the BHS carbuncle is still on the cards. Most of Market Street could do with flattening enall.
Go to any local centre…. Rotherham, Donny, Wakefield, Bradford, Huddersfield, they don’t even come close. I was sceptical at the first draught of the plans, but it works really well…. “If we build it, they will come!”
Are people denying Barnsley is a **** hole? All things considered I would never choose to live in Barnsley. How many lakes fields and woods are in Barnsley town centre? if you want green within half an hour, with Kent and Sussex on your doorstep and so many lakes and rivers, worlds your oyster just because people are used to perceiving Barnsley is some unknown haven of paradise... doesn’t mean you can’t be open minded to see that other places have more going for them. it’s fine for your own ignorant opinion to be wrong, I completely accept that. the food and ale really isn’t up to scratch in Barnsley, but it’s all subjective so I respect your opinion that you sadly think it is. Barnsley fans slag off another town, yet can’t take what they throw... there’s a shocker! My last 5 dialogues with locals I didn’t know in Barnsley have resulted in racist bigoted xenophobic views that I didn’t ask for or welcome. There are some good people in Barnsley. There are also some vile scummy people there too.
Flippin 'eck!!! Unbelievably harsh and I would say mistaken. Yes there are some scumballs in Barnsley but there are scumballs in Kent and Sussex too. The transformation in the physicality of the town centre has been great. No doubt about it in my view.
Are you alright pal? I make no apologies for being proud of my home town and the majority of friendly people who live here. The affordable dining and drinking is also pretty good. I can walk from my house and be in the middle of the countryside in half an hour.
