"deeply religious people" by which I assume you mean fundamentalist zealots of which there are as many atheist zealots. Any lack of compassion you may perceive is limited to a very small minority. For every one of that minority there are thousands of an alternative disposition. A great example is Trump who claims to embrace Christian values but his actions disprove his claim, for example his anti abortion stance. It brings to mind a quote in Ecclesiastes "Tis better to heed a quite wise man than the rantings of a king in his court of fools".

Not true. According to the FA I love jesus is a religious message not a political message and religious messages are banned.

As for separating Church from State, most Christians couldn’t care less one way or the other. It’s just not important to them.

Are you saying you think a similar proportion of Christians oppose abortion as atheists/agnostics?

A shade over half of Christians support separation of church and state, and I don't see what the argument against that separation is.

I'm in favour of people living their lives according to whatever they happen to believe, I'm vehemently against them trying to force those beliefs on others.

Personally I believe in freedom of expression. I believe in the right to not wear a poppy, the right for the LGBTQ community to live the life they want to live without discrimination and the right of Sam Morsy not to wear a poppy. We have all grown up with different cultures and different influences and the one size fits all model doesn't work.

That being said, I don't agree that the rainbow armband and laces are virtue signalling. Ireland is lauded for voting in gay marriage, but 1 in 3 people voted against. That's 1 in 3 people who voted for one rule for me and a different rule for you, and 1 in 3 who thought their opinion was more important than someone else's rights. There is still plenty of work that needs to be done in the west and seeing the likes of VVD and KDB supporting the community can make a difference for youngsters struggling with their identity.

My main point however is that the Premier League is not just an English league, it has a huge global reach and the rainbow message is one that needs sending globally and needs to be seen in Lagos, Kigali, Jakarta and Mumbai, as much as it does locally.
